View Full Version : Does any feel that male shopping is still feminine?

A thread here brought on this thought: Is guy shopping feminine? I don't mean the sterotypical guy who goes in, grabs what he needs and is out. I mean the type of shopping where there are 5 or 6 stores you gotta go in a check out everytime you are there. My friends go on shopping sprees and drag me along. They go in and they know different cuts, different washes, different model names. I'm at the foot locker for like 2 minutes and I'm done shopping. Can't wait to go home and mod my car or sleep. Being a mall rat aint my thing. So many guys I know are shopaholics now. What happened? Good thing my girl hates shopping too.

I don't think it is feminine. Sometimes I go to 5 or 6 stores looking for some basketball shoes that I really like and I do the same when looking for jeans because jeans last a long time and I want them to be "just right". Since I've gotten older, I don't change my clothes that much (buying new clothes to match what's "in"). Since I don't change clothes that much, I shop around because I know that what I buy I have to like for a couple years.

Study shows that if it takes longer than...let's say 6 min. to buy a pair of pants in this case, then it maybe considered feminine shopping! :D

I remembered that picture which is why I argue that the stereotype is slowly changing.

I hate shopping and I can't stand the mall. I guess I'm lucky that I have three friends that own their own clothing companies :D. I get all my gear from them and at a third the price. On top of that, no one wears what I wear unless I know them. I have a thing against wearing popular brand names that everyone else has. Esoteric is where it's at. Since everyone and their mother shops at the mall, that's a good way to find yourself wearing the same thing as someone else at a party. Plus there is a MUCH better selection of popular brands at indie stores and online catalogs. I don't see how window shopping in the mall for fun could be enjoyable?

There is a stereotype of people who are mall rats, a steroetype of shallow, ordinary, middle-of-the-road, fall-in-line kids with too much time on their hands. I do agree with you that this cultural mentality of mass-consumption is slowly blurring the lines and more and more people are adapting to this materialistic lifestyle. Remember folks, that Orange Alert is the highest threat level that Bush recommends you go to the mall and buy things! Red Alert means shop online ;).

I am not arguing that multi-store shopping for an item is a bad thing. In fact, I do not consider research and bargain hunting a bad thing at all. I am only seeing a mall adventure for the sake of going (without direct purpose) is a senseless frivolity that has encorporated the male gender. I have often wondered why women go to the mall without any purpose. I do not understand why people window shop when they don't have a purpose. It is like using ebay without searching. Do you not need some sort of primary purpose?

I agree that esoteric is where it is at, but where does the average consumer find esotericism without rejection? And in addition, where does the average consumer find it at an affordable price? Von dutch, for example, was a little known brand that many glorified for it's discreteness. Now, after being acceepted and sold at the local Nordstroms, it has lost it's appeal to many of its core automotive fanatics. There is a conflict of consumer identity and social acceptance.

You could compare this to some people who go around to car dealers just to test-drive cars. They may not be looking to buy a car at that very moment, but they are there to test the car out to see if they like it. Women kinda do the same thing: they go around trying on various clothes to compare and see what they like so they can make a purchase after they decided what they really want. Women also do this mall thing because it's a way for them to socialize with each other. There are also *some* women out there who shop because it somehow makes them feel better  So it seems that women do have a purpose for shopping, although it is quite different from what men consider to be purpose.

I can't stand shopping. I think you're "American league" if you spend more than 25 seconds picking out what you want in the mall... Come on people you either like it or you don't!

I do however love shopping with women I'm in love with & having them try sexy things I want t see on them so I can get a hard on & then buy it if I like it.

I have no problem shopping & spending money on he wardrobe; just so long as I have the final say & I'm the only slipping you in and out of it...

If I'm going to go near the mall I make sure when I go there, they have what I want. I'm not gonna make a trip all the way to the mall to have them tell me they do not have it.

As an alternative to them not having it, I instead shop online. No lines, No waits, just buy and wait to be shipped.

I like shopping with my girl even if we don't buy anything because I enjoy spending time with her.

I used to hate shopping but now my wife can leave me wandering for hours around in a mall or more likely a Wal*Mart or Best Buy and I'm a happy camper. :D

I could wander quite a while in a Best Buy, but there's only so much wandering a guy can do in the Gap, Banana Republic or Nordstrom...

I'm in and out, get what i want and leave but if i'm with some friends and they want to look around, then it's all good but if they want to start trying on a bunch of stuff and ask me how it looks on them, i'm out!
