Hi. I just got a Car Chip E/X car monitoring device. (See http://www.thecarchip.com) It was $129.95.
You plug in this little device into the ODB II port (under the dash on my GS). It will capture a lot of data (they say up to 300 hours worth) and you can then transfer the data to a PC and plot it, analyze it, etc.
It will show the trips I took, how fast I accelerated, how rapidly I braked, and can monitor a number of other parameters.
I've only just installed it so no data yet. I'll post more once I've driven this week.
Here's a pic of some parameters you can tell the chip to store.
This looks like it would before useful for before/after data comparisons for mods! As well as longterm differences in running condition (tranny fluid temps after TC installs for example)
Well today I had the CarChip E/X installed and it recorded 5 trips:
1) To work
2) To lunch
3) Back to work
4) From work, stop at gas station near home
5) Gas station to home
I only realized I'd made 5 discrete 'trips' when I downloaded the data.
This was a typical commute to work, I go down some residential type roads, then onto a major highway and 'fly' to work.
Here's my speed graph for going to work (trip 1) shown in the supplied software:
(You can see my trip took about 18 mins, and I'm not exactly an early riser )

OK, one more - there's a trip 'report' that summarizes the info / parameters and also shows where I braked or accelerated 'hard' or 'extreme'!!! You can set the parameters for what constitutes hard or extreme. I left them at defaults. As you can see it shows I accelerated 'extreme' once (yeeehaaa) but didn't brake extreme (good).
Even after 1 day I give this widget a big . I think it will be interesting to look at data after various trips and especially a run in the GA or NC mountains!
Well after a week of letting this little device collect data, I decided to hook it up to the computer and download and review it all.
I'm not going to post all the graphs again, but it was VERY interesting looking at my driving habits and comparing drives to/from work and other trips (to lunch, etc.). I like the fact that everything in the CarChip E/X is time stamped so I can see exactly when I took the trips. I can also see where I took a different way home because I could see the highway was jammed. The alternate route has a lot of lights (Buford Hwy for those in Atlanta) so I see a lot of 'hard accelerations' and braking counted by this little big brother.
I've now reconfigured it to capture rpms and intake air temp from now on because that will be interesting to correlate with speed, engine load, etc.
Another reason I'm not going to post the graphs is cuz they make me realize I'm even more of a 'lead foot' than I thought.
Anyway, it's pretty cool and I'm glad I have it. We have the monthly car meet tomorrow so I may have some 'interesting' data after that. I'm also looking forward to seeing the data after a long trip.
