Interesting facts for calendar year 2003
Lexus car sales: 126,820 (down 15.3%)
Lexus light truck sales: 132,935 (up 57.5%)
Looks like the GX470 saved the day in terms of the sales race.
More interesting facts
BMW car sales: 200,144 (up 6%)
BMW light truck sales: 40,715 (down 4.7%)
What I find really surprising is the margin that BMW outsells Lexus in terms of cars. In fact, if you add Mini in, BMW outsells Lexus. Of course if you add Toyota in.....
This does however shed light on why they are introducing the RX400H a year ahead of the next gen GS. People are buying sport utes not cars.
If they're counting the RX as a truck (which I think they are), that should account for a lot of the jump in sales. I probably see a half dozen '04 RX 330s for every GX I see on the road, and the redesigned RX was available for a good part of calendar year '03.
Ive heard the RX counted as a light truck, luxury suv, and in a few cases: wagon. The LX and GX are usually classified as a full-size truck or full size luxury suv. I believe this is because the RX is based off the camry so I hear, and the other two are 4-runner and landcruiser respectively.
