I was at the car wash today and saw a Mercedes with a for sale sign in the window. The guy let me drive it and it seemed really comfy inside. It's a 420 sel. They guy has kept it in good shape and it runs good aside of the tranny being slushy. I was hoping to get some opinions on whether or not the car seems like it's worth $1,700.
I really like the car, but since it is an '89 i wasn't sure of it's value. I usually don't go for the older designs, but the car is super comfy and actually very nice inside. full woodgrain, all leather, and in excellent shape too. i have included a few pics to help your judgement.
I just don't know anything about Mercedes and need some guidance on pricing it.

I can't help it man i like cars. This will be parked beside 3 bmw's and my Lexus I have always been a car freak. i figure it can't hurt to have a driveway full of import sports and luxury. I am not one of those people that can do just one style of car. I need comfort some days and sport the next.
I am just not sure about what an older Mercedes can command in asking price. That's $2k of my money, i wanna make sure it is worth it. Pretty car though, the gold/champagne doesn't show well in the pics.

but it is clean and runs great. I like the way it rides. I could go to ATL and back without even knowing i went. super smooth car. plenty of comfort.
You're right about that one. Most of those 10+ yr old Benz's have high mileages, but are usually kept in excellent condition (on the outside and inside), and they drive great on a daily basis.
If I were in your shoes, I'd take it for $1,700 considering the car is in excellent condition with no major mechanical problems, etc. I view this as one of those "great deals" you simply can't pass up, but then again it all comes down to the question of whether you really need this car

Good luck with your decision
I agree with lexusk8. Even though they obviously don't have the safety features the newest Mercedes products do, Mercedes built some of its best cars, quality-wise, in the late 1980's. The quality did not really start to drop until about 1996 or so...and then really dropped off after 1998. It's hard to go wrong with this car for only $1700 if it is in good shape. The body structure on these cars is like a tank.
Keep one thing in mind, though....parts and labor, especially at a Mercedes shop, for anything it does end up needing may be expensive....even more than most other European makes.
OLT I'd try to find a quality local non-dealer MB service shop and take the car there for inspection. Also, talk to them about they *expect* to go wrong with the car going forward and how expensive it is to fix. The $1700 may pale in comparison if they say you're likely to spend $5K in the next 2 years in service/parts.
Don't do it. The excessive repairs will eat you alive with that car. Parts and Labor will add up to more than the value of the vehicle in a very short time. My bet is that it's a money pit and dude wants to get rid of his problem quick. Good luck either way.
