David,

We've got a forum for non-model-specific questions, moving your post there .

Radar detectors have been discussed MANY times before, please try the search feature and you'll find a wealth of discussion. The two most highly recommended by our members are the Valentine One and Passport 8500. Couple of threads below for example:

No problem! There is also a new upgrade to the Passport 8500 out recently, but I haven't done a lot of research on it yet or seen any independent magazine tests.

a lot of people who have the valentine one swears by it, but i had it for about 1 month and returned it. There is a lot of false signals even if you disable the K band, everysingle time i drove by a grocerie store or anything with the automatic door opener my V1 would go off, it got soo anoying, and sometimes i would drive by police officers cleary sitting on the side of the road waiting for speeders or cops just going with the flow of traffic on the freeway and the V1 would NOT notify me. its pretty lame because the cop has to actually have his radar on or his laser on for any of these radar detectors to work. I will never buy another radar detector until someone designs one that will notify me when there is a black and white patrol car/bike around me and they do not need to have any equipment on.

oh yeah another thing, if you do buy one, get the V1, i think the arrows do help alot, even though it did give me false alarm, the arrows showed me the directions it came from so i knew it was a fake, also after a while you actually know when the radar detector is going to go off before it actually goes off, because you know there is a grocerie store ahead,

i gotta admit though, the first day i got it and put it into my car 5 minutes after the delivery guy came, the sound the V1 made with all those lights got me all excited, i actually drove around seeing if i could find where the source was coming from, sometimes it would come from weird sources like SUV with LED tail lights, and i would follow that car around. lol.

I saved some money and bought a passport 8500 on ebay for 255shipped, It was a great deal. Ive only had one ticket since but that was because I wasnt paying any attention to the radar and it has save me countless times. Just recently got my 1st ticket in 1yr after buying the passport 8500. I highly reccomend it. I would have to look into more about the x50, I see good things about it but waiting for people to by it and see how it compares to the older passport 8500.

So if anyone has the new x50 tell me how it is. Thanks!

I tend to like Passport 8500 X50 (the blue LED display)more than V1.
I have never use any raders in my life. Does anyone know that one? how good is that?

Thanks.....

8500 is very good. Valentine is supposedly a bit more sensitive plus it has an advantage of seeing radar/laser BEHIND you. I like the fact that the Passport is smaller than Valentine and more programmable and less expensive. As Jmai said the Valentine will go off a lot on false alarms although I think X band can now be turned off (like I have on my older Passport 7500) which is fine because not even Barney Fife uses X band.

As far as price, they're all way overpriced, but then again, it's better than getting tickets so think of it as insurance. You can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks for you guys!!
I also read the 2004 Radar Detector Test and Buyer's Guide:
http://www.motortrend.com/features/c...ar/index7.html

Escort Passport 8500 wins with just 0.1 point than V1. Wow....
As bitkahuna said " You can't go wrong with either one"
And since the all new passport X50 has come out, I wanna try the new stuff.

When using radars, there are X-band, K-band and Ka-band
What do these mean to us?
