OK, I am probably gonna get ripped a new one for posting this HERE, but I really value your (plural) opinion. My friend has a 1997 Mitsubishi Diamante with 66,000 one-owner miles. It's a 7.75 cosmetically and a 9 mechanically, we think (meaning we don't know of any mechanical problems but you never know for sure). He sold it on Ebay for $3500 and the deal fell thru.

Should I buy this as a winter/extra vehicle, or am I just buying extra repairs/headache? In other words, what are the odds that this will give me 3-4 years at 5,000-6,000 miles/year with no major aggravation? I would change the timing chain, as the folks on the Mitsubishi board say that's a must around 60,000 miles. The vehicle has new brakes and tires.

What do you all think?

Yes, more replies in car chat. IMHO rather buy an old lexus as a beater ^__^

nothing wrong with putting miles on the lex unless it is a showcar. if you want to save gas money, then buy a 4banger. otherwise thse engines are pretty damn reliable IMHO.

I think it would be a nice beater vehicle. I say go for it...price seems reasonable for it.

Mitsubishi is not exactly a trouble-free car. If you want a beater, get either a reliable one or one that is fuel efficient

My friend's 2000 eclipse failed on him at 44K. For $3500, you can get a 4 banger (honda or toyota) that will be more reliable and better on gas, plus easy to maintain. The small honda engines can really take a beating and are fun to drive. Persinally, I'd stick w/ toyota (celica, mr2).

What are you looking for? Sedan, fwd, sporty, etc?

I've also found Mazdas to be almost indestructible and cheap, AND fun to drive!
