i currently own a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, its pretty fast but i recently put it back to stock because im thinking im at the point where im out of of my boy racer phase and its time for something refined and lux. i was thinking a 94 or so SC400(i owe 10k on my car still so i'd have to trade it in + throw down some cash.) im a 20 year old male in orange county, california. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Welcome to Clublexus. We are pretty much all Subaru fans here. Great cars.
I've seen WRX owners switch to the IS 300, similar in size, you can turbo it to make is fast or faster than the WRX. Then you get the added reliability and dealer service and panache of owning a Lexus, without sacrificing your need to mod or be "boy racer".
The SC 400 is smooth, the 92-94 versions made 250hp, the 95-97 versions made 260hp, the 98-00 versions made 290 hp. THe sold 20k in 1992 and dropped off quickly as the yen went down and the price went from 38k to 52k. The car is perfect, classic, won numerous awards for interior, exterior and overall.
If you want to mod, the SC 300 is the way to go. 2JZ says it all.

i dont have a lot of $$$ to spend thats my concern, i still owe 10k on my car so im guessing i'd only have $10k total to spend on a car and i'd rather not finance another one. if i got a 92 or 93 with like 150k miles on it how much more life would it have left? im not sure i want to mod another car otherwise i'd keep this one im probably going to end up with an SC400, put some nice 19s on it, maybe a body kit, some audio/video stuff, window tint, and leave it at that.

If you owe 10k, a 92-93 SC will be under 10k. Not sure how u got outta that. I do know for every 1,000 u owe=$50 on your monthly payment.SC400, put some nice 19s on it, maybe a body kit, some audio/video stuff, window tint, and leave it at that. That's all:D
I'm 26, and at 20 had a ES, 21 a GS. There was no WRX, EVO, SRT-4, 350Z, G35C, RX-8, Mazda 3 and all those new wonderul cars out. Cars pretty much :( unless you had dough. I may not have been 1SICKLEX if the competition didn't suck so much back then.
I'd keep the WRX and mod it out.

:-P so SC400 wont do it for me? its hard to pimp the wagon around here and a wrx even. i want a luxury car and this isnt it. i dont have the $$$ or the drive to mod my car any more because i know sooner or later im gonna break it then ill be sad. it happened with my last car.

The sc400 is a wonderful car. I too went from boy racer to luxury. I made the switch because it costed way too much to make a car go fast. Not only that, the faster you go, the more parts you'll have to replace. So I traded in my modded teggy in which I spent over thousands on for my 92sc400. I left my sc400 stock because I didn't want to ruin the ride comfort. By putting bigger wheels, I was afraid it might decrease ride comfort so I left the car stock, but then again it depends on your suspension set up also.
The sc400 may not be as fast as the wrx(1/4 mile) but this 2 ton beast can really shine on the freeway. Getting speed up to 120mph is nothing for the sc400 and best of all, it only feels like you are doing 80mph. The car does not vibrate at all!! Go test drive a sc400 first, then you can make your decision. If you want, try to get the 98+ sc400 because they have 290hp and probably around $20k for a low milege one. Best of luck!!

No by all means GET a SC 400. Hell I had one (forgot):D , It is what convinced me RWD is the way to go. Until possibly AWD.
It's reliable, can be modded and is a TIMELESS vehicle.

im having sort of a problem here, i can only seem to afford a 92-95(maybe) sc300/sc400, if i get one with over 100k miles will it still be reliable? does a 92-95 have a dated interior? can anyone link me to a site showing the reliability (for some reason consumer reports doesnt have it on the sc's before the sc430 and i want to show my mom cause shes nervous about me getting a car almost 10 years older than my current one. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I got my SC300 5 speed w/ 68.5k on the clock and (ALL the maintenance done @ the dealership) for $9,500
SC's go forever. Find a five speed SC300 and find happiness for under 10k.
I'm sure driving a WRX you like to wind it out, an SC3 is just the same... except really reliable and more luxury style... and us SC owners tend to be stingy, so we have a knack for finding the best bang for the buck :)
PM me if you've got more questions -- I'll send you some autotrader links if you'd like.

i really like the SC, but if i was to get one i'd go for the automatic, ive had enough of the drivetrain woes with manual cars plus im kinda tired of manual now and if i get a luxury car i want it to be auto, ill get another manual car later on as a project.

I say go for the SC400! You'll never look back.
Your budget will probably only allow a '92 - '94 which you don't have to worry about. Since you definately
want an auto, go for the 400 (they only came in auto anyway). Don't worry so much about mileage but rather condition. The SC is probably the best built and most reliable car ever made along with the LS and GS (I'm not kidding you). They can potentially go 400,000+ miles. I have a '93 with 192,000 miles and it runs like new and I'm never in the shop.
Your question of whether the interior of the early SC's looking dated? Absolutely not. I think they look better
than most of todays interiors; very classic and timeless design.
Look for one with good paint, clean interior (no torn leather), and preferably under 150K, but as mentioned mileage isn't the biggest issue.
Good luck with your choice!
:)

do what you like, but the SC300 5 speed isn't made of glass like the WRX's is.
if you're going to get a auto, and don't want 300+ HP, then the SC400 is for you. If you think a sleeper SC would be fun down the road, then the 300 is your car.

I bought my car from somone is San Deigo, and I live in MA :) if you find a car you want looked at, try posting in the regional forums, you could find someone who will check it out for you.
Yeah, insurance is quite nice :)
I guess a supra is a supra, 2JZ-GE or 2JZ-GTE (don't tell that to a MKIV TT owner though!)
