If money was not an issue and you decided to paint your car a custom color, what color would you pick? Just pretend you are spending someone else's money, (and no, I did not win the lottery, I just want to get other folks thoughts on a custom color choice)
Note (money no object, but we just want to talk about painting your car a new color :) )

I guess I'm in the minority who love the noble yet mystic feel of the Amethyst Violet light purplish metalic color offered by MB because they don't seem to be offering the color anymore.:( It is one color I could not get my eyes off when I saw one roll by in person.:p

My top ten favorites...in descending order.
1. Amythist ( medium purple-gray )
2. Lime Green
3. Sunset Burnt Orange
4. Violet Purple
5. Electric Blue
6. Chrome Yellow
7. Pearl Oyster White
8. Black Cherry...a very dark reddish-purple
9. Candy Apple Red
10. Copper
As you can see......I don't go for " me too " everyday colors. I think the factory color choices on many cars suck....especially on traditional luxury cars like the LS430, Q45, Lincoln Town Car, etc....

Thanks. The average car brochure has the same old stuff over and over.......white, black, silver, burgundy, dark blue, dark green, and beige. That stuff is definitely not for me...apparantly not for you either.

Well u know I got to go with some form of white. On a special edition 993 Porsche, there is a color called Pearlessence. It's a Pearl Frost white with a very small hint of blue. I'll have to show you a picture as one day I WILL paint some car this color. My favorite car color bar-none.
2nd GGP (Graphite Gray) which I thought was reserved for expensive cars but I swear I just saw an Altima with that color....
3rd Benz silvers. They do silver like no other. And have so many shades. Great palette to choose from, especially the Designo colors.

Benz Designo Silver has a greenish tint, I'll pick it over their brilliant silver. I also saw a SL55 in Diamond silver(bluish), looks real sharp

I'll agree, 1SICK....Pearl White is one of my top 10 favorites. It was a color perfected by several companies....notably Audi, Cadillac, and Infiniti.
And, while I am not a silver fan, you are correct that M-B does it like no other. Their classic silver is so bright that it almost looks like chrome. There's a reason for that......silver is M-B's classic color, going back continuously many decades to the 40's and 50's. The famous gull-wing 190 and 300SL's that so many car collectors drool over are valued most in silver....with red interiors.

I've got two on my wish list.
Candy apple red. Nothing like several coats of red candy topped off with several coats of clear.
Next would be several coats of black pearl with a hint of purple in it. Would look black except for rare moments where the light brings out the purple.

Lapis Blue. Comes stock on the Prosce 911 carrera, but not the twin. Combine a dark blue and light purple and you get lapis. its very pearlescent, and shifts from light blue, dark blue to light purple. very close to RSP, but a little more pearl.

It's Like a Black Cherry Pat....
My choices:
I would keep my Sandstone Beige color but add some yellow pearl in, so at the right angles in the sun, it would shine a vibrant bright yellow:D
My second choice would be a color similar to the LS430 Briarwood pearl or Cypress Pearl olive color...
Colors that have grown on me lately?? Would have to be the IS300 Bluestone Metallic and the Alabaster Metallic and the MKIV Baltic Blue.....

Classic Amythist is named after a mineral rock with a medium purplish-gray color...it actually is a semi-precious stone. It is truly a beautiful automotive color if done correctly. Cadillac did a true Amythist purple-gray metallic some years back on its larger cars. Subaru did a color it called Amythist in the early-mid 1990's.....it was a little more pure purple with just a very light touch of gray. More recently Lexus did an "Amythist" on the SC430, but it really was just a dark purple...not a true Amythist.
Hope that explains it for you.

Thanks, Hameed. Chrome yellow is the vivid bright yellow you see on Feraris, lambos, Mustang GT's, and some sport trucks. It differs from the Lexus IS300 Solar Yellow and the lighter BMW and Subaru WRX yellows by being brighter and having a very small amount of orange in it.
Copper and Burnt Brange are closely related...actually what Nissan uses today is closer to Copper.

Forgive me for being blunt, guys, but in my opinion, owning something like this for show purposes is one thing...that's OK, but only an idiot would actually try and drive something like this on a publlc road. The glare on a sunny day would be absolutely blinding.....both off the hood for the driver inside, and off the rest of the car to oncoming or following drivers. Years ago, that's why stock chrome wiper blades were outlawed and why they are all flat black now from the factory.....because of visibility problems with glare. Imagine the whole car like that.

i dont think you could even drive those chrome on the without getting hit.
Probably the only production car to have anything even near this in significant numbers was the DeLorean stainless steel gull-wing car built in Northern Ireland about 25 years ago...after John Delorean left GM. Its finish, while pure unpainted metal, was a much lower-gloss brushed-metal. And we all know the rest of DeLorean's story......getting caught by narcs with a suitcase full of drugs trying to raise enough money to stay in buisness.

While we're on the subject of paint colors here, one interesting point that has yet to be brought up on this thread is just how much the average car buyer today is really getting screwed when it comes to color choice. A perfect example is the upcoming Chrysler 300C SRT-8...sources say it will be available only in silver or black. Excuse me?????...this is a high-performance sport sedan, not a funeral hearse.:egads:
Years ago....in the 50's, 60's, and to a lesser extent, 70's.....you could literally have your choice of DOZENS of factory colors....even on non-luxury cars. Two-tones.....even THREE-tones....were everyday occurances....both outside and inside. A single-shade car, or a car with dull colors was condidered "square"....you weren't "with it" inless you had an Impala SS or a Ford Galaxie with orange, white, and turqouise combined, or pink, white, and rose.....you get the picture. Plymouths and Dodges in the late 60's and early 70's had as much as 36 different colors to choose from. Then, sometime in the late 70's, the bean counters decided that they could save money by limiting paint and interior choices....and the rest is history. And while I have a generally high opinion of both Honda and Subaru, they are two of the worst offenders here......some of their models only come in a couple of paint colors, period, especially with interior color matches.

Good point...I had forgotten about that. It's not so much that the paint had to be water-based, but around 1990 or so EPA changed the auto paint formulation rules...that was part of the Clean Air Act of 1990. It mandated a change from volatile paint that had fumes that would evaporate up into the ozone layer to paint that would not do so....which, as you point out, basically meant water-based paint. That increased costs even more....and auto manufacturers had problems for several years in the early 1990's with premature peeling paint, until they had the new formulas perfected. From what I remember, Ford, Chrysler, and some Mazdas especially had this problem. Sometimes it was " covered " ( no pun intended ) by extended paint warranties or if a customer complained hard enough.
