New Vanquish S V12: The Fastest Production Aston Martin
The fastest production model ever to be built by Aston Martin is making its world debut at the Paris Motor Show 2004.
With a maximum speed in excess of 200 mph (321 km/h) and a 6.0 litre V12 engine developing 520 horsepower, the Vanquish S has been designed to deliver even greater performance, complemented by subtle suspension and steering changes and a number of interior and external style revisions.
The Vanquish S has received subtle but effective changes to complement its elegant muscular body. The famous Aston Martin grille has a new rounded and more open appearance for better cooling, and an aerodynamic splitter improves high-speed stability.
At the rear, a redesigned boot lid featuring a new high mounted stop lamp reduces lift and improves balance and stability, helping to achieve an impressive Cd figure of 0.32.
These differences on the Vanquish S not only improve the appearance but also enhance performance. All the exterior body panels are constructed from aluminium with each individual panel hand tailored to the central structure to ensure a perfect panel fit. Every carefully detailed feature provides graphic evidence of the painstaking craftsmanship and quality, which is invested in its construction at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell site in Buckinghamshire.
Revised steering geometry provides a 20% quicker response, allowing the driver to apply a reduced input for required steering response. This enables the driver to be more precise with inputs - especially on winding roads - and more accurate feedback from the chassis.
The Sports Dynamics suspension, steering and braking package is now standard on the Vanquish S. This includes stiffer springs and dampers and shorter steering arms.
Further development of Aston Martin’s low emissions, all alloy, quad-overhead camshaft, 48 valve, 6.0-litre V12 engine has generated an increase in power from 460 bhp to 520 bhp (388 kW) @ 7000 rpm and torque is boosted to 425 lb-ft (577 Nm) @ 5800 rpm.
Engine enhancements include new cylinder heads with fully machined inlet ports and combustion chambers to improve airflow, revised engine mapping and new fuel injectors.
The overall interior design is a subtle blend of traditional, classic and modern materials with Bridge of Weir leather upholstery matched to contemporary metal interior fittings and finishes. A number of detailed improvements have been made to the interior of the Vanquish S to enhance the overall appeal.
The luxurious but purposeful two seat or optional 2+2 cabin now features supportive all leather trimmed sports seats with many additional and exquisite detail touches which amply demonstrate the truly special nature of this unique hand crafted sports car.
With the capacity to continue to turn heads, the design of the Vanquish is already established as a modern classic. Since its launch in 2001, the Vanquish has proved to be a huge success for Aston Martin with over 1500 cars built.
They needed something to distance it from the DB9.

Yeah, but you have to admit it's completely useless. I guess it's just a nice spec to mag race with or include in a pissing contest.
Even F1 cars don't see 200+MPH for more than a few seconds on some tracks. And I bet any production car would be a little more than unstable at 200MPH. When they say professional driver on a closed course, they mean it.

How many times have you gone 0-60 in 5.xx in your SUB?
Sometimes knowing a car is capable is enough for some. You're right for the most part though, an average driver would never take it close to 200+, but a nut like me would die trying.:eek2:
BTW, I would wager some of the more extreme production cars, essentially street legal race cars would be more than planted at 200+, McLaren F1, Enzo, etc...

I figured you were going to ask that...The answer is that I've never tried a full-out run in my Subaru and probably never will. I have never driven a car more than 90MPH. I do not street race. I leave real driving to real drivers with real skills and equipment, because let's face it, a stock Enzo or Carrera GT still pales in comparison to true race cars and the people who drive them. The beautiful thing about my Subaru is that it's a brilliant daily driver with plenty of power for all situations, including when I want to have some fun.
Although I like to use mag times in my comparisons, that's not why I bought the XT. I bought it because it's a stick-shift AWD turbo and the overall driving experience is fun as hell. If it took 7 seconds 0-60, I still would have purchased it.
Perhaps my XT could be more responsive with slightly more linear power delivery, but I honestly could never see myself needing/wanting a faster car.
I did, on accident, pop the clutch and crank it up a bit (not even to redline, though) in first gear and the power really scared me. I believe them when they say the F-XT is the fastest car on earth to 30MPH. I know I currently do not have the skill to fully manage it.
Those 200MPH figures car makers advertise are simply for marketing. I bet the marketeers pray every night that the majority of the owners will not attempt 200MPH. Watch an F1 race. Even some of those cars can get very twitchy around 200MPH.
"Street-legal race car" is also just a ploy. There are more differences between the actual Carrera GT and whatever LeMans car it is supposedly based on then there are similarities. And despite being F1 inspiried, the Enzo is a technological joke compared to the Ferrari F2004.
Like I said, I would bet 200MPH in any production car would be a very scary experience. The GS300 can supposedly do something like 140MPH in stock form. Would you feel safe doing that? I sure as heck know I wouldn't tempt death like that at 140MPH, let alone 200MPH. There is not a single piece of highway in America I would feel safe driving 200MPH on. There is not a single commerically-avaliable, off-the-shelf tire compound I would trust my life to at 200MPH. It would be virtually impossible to recover from a mistake at 200MPH. Unfortunately, there is very good chance you WOULD die trying to get to 200MPH...:(
Holy crap, I dunno why I wrote so much...:o

Ah man, you have a reply for everything don't you. Of course an Enzo can't replicate a real F1 car, or else it wouldn't be street legal.;)
As far as feeling stable at 200+ neither of us would really know since we've never been that fast in any of these cars. If I ever do and live to tell about it, I'll let ya know.
I HAVE been 140mph in the SC though, on stock suspension in a straight line of course. Not the safest thing but I'm a risk taker. Do I advocate it? No. I would probably limit any attempt at 200mph to a racetrack. Definitely not on a public highway. :cylon:..
Back on topic though, the Aston is beautiful and marketing ploy or not 200+ makes it oustanding!!:D
The new Vanquish S certainly looks yummy at all sides and angles. It's about time for the car to join the clear tailight-lens group :D
I'm digging the 2-tone leather interior; it doesn't take away the overall appeal of the cockpit and center console. Maybe I'm not seeing it in the pic, but I can't seem to find the gate shifter. Perhaps it's connected to the right side of the steering wheel?
I like the leather wrapped dashes that Aston Martin has in their cars, very classy

Yes, but not this new, more powerful S version. Lara Croft drove a new Vanquish in the first Tomb Raider movie too, even before Bond.

I think the gear select is on the dash. I remember seeing a pic somewhere, or it might have been at the NYC auto show. The starter is in the middle, between N and D. Its pretty interesting. I wouldnt mind seeing something like that in a Lexus.

Although this Aston is certainly enough to make any young boy crack open his piggy bank to count pennies, Aston's attempt to revive the not-so-popular flagship model comes at a seemingly illogical time. With the bulding excitement of the soon to be released DB9, Aston's costumers are already sold on the more technically advanced "inferior" model. Maybe a few of the DB9 owners will be looking for a weekend car?

Watch Mischeif ( the playersrun i think ) with Porsche Ruf TT doing 200+ on freeway. Those cars are not a big improvement over a regular 996. Guys from the latest playersrun said they were doing 186 in old Testarossa. Its almost 2k5. Cars are capable of doing 200+ easily.
I've used to be a big fan of F1 races. Yes some of the cars can get very twichy around 200, but only because aero packages on this cars are set for a slower tracks and this way racers are getting better cornering speed and improved times. If you will follow the history of F1 starting 95 for example, you will see that teams are forced by the rules to make wings and other aerodinamic parts smaller and smaller. This way there's more action in the race and more ppl watch it.

I did 155 in C32 lots of times and you can drive it with 1 hand and your passanger won't even notice it unless they gonna look at the speedo or window. GS isn't the best example for 140mph run, try m5 or sl55. Those cars are more stable doing 155 than gs300 past 100 mark. I personally did 174mph on 73 one night, car was stable and very predictable and sure fun as hell. I bet 200 mark for an Enzo is a piece of cake.

Carrera GT never made it To Le Mans, actually CGT is a Le Mans car than never made it to a race track, but since Porsche already made it and invested lots of $$$$ in it they did a road friendly supercar. What a great way to make losses into gains.
The only reason Enzo is a technological joke compared to F2004 is because nobody needs all this gadgets that are made to save couple 0.001 seconds on the race track and noone keeps an F1 team in his garage to take care about the car.
