Just want some feedback on what you think of the new Land Rover that is to replace the older defunct Discovery. The reviews I've read on it so far have been very promising, and you guys being massive gear heads...well I wanted to hit you guys up.
I currently drive the GX470, and it's been great. Love it to no end, but I really wanted the LX. However, the LX is going through a design revision and I have no idea when the final product will be ready. Anyone got more info on this?
Not sure about the new LX info, but Car & Driver has a nice test on the new Land Rover LR3 in the October 2004 issue. I like the styling, and the HP figures look great, but the price and MPG info are a bit of a turn off for me.
If this is anything to follow the older Land Rovers, stay away from it like you would from a diseased body in the bottom of a drainage ditch. Reliability=COMPLETE NIGHTMARE.
Considering C&D placed it between the X5 and the RX330 in terms of sportiness and cushyness (if that's a word?), I think they've priced themselves out of the market at $73K. Even with all the nice technical toys, definitely not worth the money, IMO.

The C&D article shows base prices to be between $45K and $50K
I have to agree with the comments here. The new Rover appears to have priced itself out of its league. It appears they are competing directly with the GX470/LandCruiser. Not sure if that is such a great idea since the vehicle is so new, but it is jusing Jaguar's V8 motor. So who knows...great numbers but poor reliability...so instep with the Brits considering Jaguar just closed the original factory and I think Range Rover just shut down one of their factories bc of quality control. I hope this is not a common thing since the Aston Martin is such a beautiful creature!
I really hope the new LX is NOT a bloated Sequoia redone . I've heard rumors of a new 5.x liter V8 in the works..that would be welcomed in a vehicle this heavy.
Current LX still is fine. I've been critical of the LX in the past, but have learned the hard way that the LX is still the finest SUV there is. I don't think it needs a redesign, although it will get one soon. I just ordered a new 2005 LX, and have no problem with the fact a new one may be on the way in 2007. I'll enjoy it until then. The NAV in the new Land Rover SUCKS and it has terrible reliability history. IMO, the styling of the LX still is supreme. Get an LX or GX. You won't be sorry!!!!!
found this old post while searching for info for the LR3.
have any one driven the LR3? how do you compare it to the GX470 ?
I think both have very similar specs and pricing ( ending up to abt $50-55k, when optioned).
It has won the MT truck of the year 2005 ... must be pretty good.
any comments? which one would you take if in the market for a new SUV (just between GX470 and LR3)?
GX has a 4.7L engine vs LR3's 4.4
GX weighs 4871 lbs, and LR3 weighs between 5400 - 5800 lbs!!!
C/D guesstimate the mileage for the LR3 to be 12city/17highway mpg
and the GX gets 15/19.....I think.
And you can't beat Lexus reliability, I'm sure the new Rover is a whole lot better than the old Disco, but still might not be up to Lexus standards.
I saw a Top Gear clip testing the LR3, it does seems to have a ton of off-roading capabilities.
