hey guys. i got this from another forum as i was researching some old, less costly project cars.
the original intention was to go for an old mustang or an old vette.....
keep in mind that we had a 54 fairlane. it was a very nice car.
xxxxxxxx check this out
I take that back, now I think of it, when I hit 60 on sata anita, the sorry as blue prelude was at least 1.5 car length behind.
If the car were on the freeway it would run lots better, with the cold wind blowing right into the motor.
For those of you that seeks power but doesn't have lots of money to spend? I say go for a 240Z, you can find something decent for as low as $1500, drop another $1000-2000 in, you would have yourself a nice vintage sports car.
wanna go faster?, all you have to do, is put a hard cord cam, in a L28 motor, and maybe tripple carb, and some header, then you will be looking at 200+HP. remeber, these simple mods make so much different in old cars, since the old motors never was tuned as motors today when they roll out the factory.
looking for an Z? find more info on www.classiczcars.com
or www.zcars.com. think that no one can fix these cars? wrong, there are at least 5 specialty Z shops in LA, and there are tones of parts you can get for these cars at www.zcarparts.com, their are many z clubs here in LA as well, events are help through out the year.
I hope these info helped.
enjoy guys~xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Brings back memories.
A buddy back in the early 80's had a 240Z; gutted, de-badged, modestly built with a tri-Weber set-up. Did high 12's and that thing cornered on rails. If that car were around today with the technology available... :bigok:

Just a few years ago Nissan actually WAS buying back old, rusted-out 240Z's ( and some 260's and 280's). The 240's, especially, were notorious for lower-door-panel rust.
Anyway, Nissan was redoing the cars at a special plant and selling them as new cars...COMPLETELY rebuilt as new cars, and selling them with new titles, emissions-certified, everything....in the $25,000-$30,000 range.
I don't remember a whole lot about the details, ( this program did not get a whole lot of publicity ) but you can contact Nissan marketing and see if any of these factory-rebuilt cars are still available. ...or if any current owners are willing to re-sell. You can probably find information on it, too, in the Nissan and Z-car chat forums.

That's correct. I heard about this program in the mid. 90s as well.
The funny thing is, I have not yet seen a re-conditioned 240Z on the road today. Perhaps this program was short lived?

I really liked the Datsun/Nissan of the 70's, the 510 gives me that fuzzy feeling.
Each April like the 3'rd weekend there is a vintage Nissan car cruise that stops over in Solvang. Have been there the last 4 years to see them cruise through town. A few 510's with the SR20 DET motors transplanted some FI. Along with the Fairlady Z, roadsters... love it!
That red 510...... :bigthumbu

Man, those look real good!!!!
If I were a mechanic, I would definitely get one and play around with it. But I have no idea how to wrench. But I'm sure restoring a beat up car from the 70s will cost quite some $$$$$.
One day......just one day.

My dad owned a 1977 280z that he bought off the show-room floor. Around 87 or 88 he did a total restoration and placed best in show at the Houston Z-Car Club Meet/ Show. I remember being there when I was like 5 or 6 and seeing all the cars. The 280 was beautiful when my dad finished it, but he ended up practicaly giving it away so we could finish building our house that we now have on the Bay. He still kicks himself in the ass for selling it, but he did go on to own two different 300 ZX TT's (Z32).
I have always had a spot in my heart for older Z-Cars and would love to pick one up for a project. Imagine the possibilites! Does anyone know it a RB26DETT would fit? :cylon:
is that a Gen I Skyline inthe background??? looks to be!
has anyone ever put a skyline motor into one?:eek2:

The cars of that day were a joy to work on. My buddy's 240, was void of anything that wasn't related to running the engine, so when you looked into the engine bay you saw a polished valve cover bolted to the engine, polished side draft tri-Webers and a custom bent header and the ground. I literally felt like my butt was inches from the pavement in his car. It had like 1-2" of ground clearance.
The interiors were a bit lacking and would be reminescent of the lower end cars of today. Fit was okay but the materials were :thumbdn:
That 740 HP blue Z...that sure is a pretty car. If that thing is on the roads...don't stand in front of it...you'll get sucked in. ;) Hope he put some brakes in it too. One of the shots showed the original drums. :eek2:

As a kid, I don't remember the bumpers looking like the cars post on this thread. I always remembered the bumpers being really big and bulky (completely blocking the grille).
Can someone who's familar with these cars give me a brief background on them? I think the 240Z came with a 150HP engine. How about the 280Z? Pros/Cons of 240Z vs 280Z? I know some are 4-spd while others are 5-spd. Any info on that?
How about body styles? I personally love the following body styles.....

Does anyone know what years those body styles are? 1970-1978? Are they 240s or 280s?
I think I want one of these as a pre-midlife crisis project car.

These pics bring back memories. As a kid, my mom bought herself a 1976 280ZX 2+2. SHe kept that car for 20 years. It was the top of the line Z with power everything that was available at the time. Had beautiful wheels with Toyo tires. I used to love washing it for her because that meant I got to drive it around the block a few times. I don't remember the specs but it wasn't terribly quick. It was pretty fast due to it's relatively light weight. I loved that car. My mom wouldn't let me take it further than a block though. I could drive the brand new Caddy anywhere but couldn't take my date out in the Z. After 20 years the car had a lot of problems with the fuel injectors and mom got rid of it. She's driving a Mazda 6 now but planning to get the 350Z next.
