Beyond the fact that we're losing an ultra-exclusive vehicle to penny-pinching (albeit, here, prudent) - I don't find this all too disturbing.

Mercedes' production SL's look a thousand times more attractive than the McLaren version. And the marginal performance gain of the SLR at a rather extravagant price indicated to me that this relationship probably wasn't going to last very long at all.

Well, you know they actually "took it out back" more than once over the SLR whilst in design and production, so i figured they'd kill each other or split one.

I read the article a few days ago. My first thought was....oh no! My second thought was...yeah, I guess I could see it coming. They had trouble getting the project completed. It ended over budget and past the time frame. They probably won't sell as many as they thought. The intitial concept looked way better than the production model. The concept didn't have all those side gills. Plus, Daimler Chrysler doesn't like people telling them what to do...even if they are right.

There's no comparison even remotely. I'll take a SL65 over the SLR easy.

Incredible, Benz just built a new Mclaren center in Woking, U.K. It was millions overbudget and maybe 4 years late in completion.

Mclaren and Benz, anyone could have figured out that wasn't going to work long. They had tremendous issues with the SLR. Mclaren hated the fact it became a fat pig (near 4000lbs) and was overdone with FI, electrice everything, etc. Mclaren is about low weight, the minimum luxury sports cars.
Benz did have a point though, it is a Benz and Benz customers expect Benz luxury. So they couldn't bring a bare 3000lbs SLR with a Benz badge.

I hope Mclaren finds a way to stay alive (hello, Toyota, wanna buy) b/c they are an incredible visionary company

And excuse the spelling in this post.

we are sooo on the same page. but then again some people they think the sl65 is not a good car, "sometimes too much isn't a good thing". well, put some 305 or even 315 in the back and we will talk again

What about their Formula 1 program?

A Toyota-McLaren supercar does have a nice ring to it

Don't count on that one, toyota has invested to much money into their own setup.
