Toyota Australia Unveils a Muscle-Bound Camry
Date Posted 03-07-2005
MELBOURNE, Australia — Conservative Camry lovers may be outraged, but Toyota Australia has souped up their favorite ride.
Toyota Australia has introduced a supercharged Camry model at the Melbourne International Motor Show. The prototype, code-named TS-01, looks mean with its new front end. Under the hood lurks a 248-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V6. This gives the TS-01 a 0-to-60 time of under 7.2 seconds.
The five-speed manual transmission, which features a short-throw shift lever, receives input from a heavy-duty sport clutch adapted from Toyota Team Racing's rally Corollas.
TS-01 uses 18-inch Michelin Pilot Sports tires mounted on specially cast 14-spoke wheels. The suspension has been stiffened and tuned to approximate a race setup while still providing road comfort and compliance.
Even the body has received a sport-sculpted makeover.
What this means to you: The Aussies, instrumental in the resurrection of the GTO, are flexing their muscle again.

AdrianXT 03-08-05, 06:32 AM Whhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatt?! This definitely gets my "Hit it like the fist of an angry god" award.  :eek2:
Vegassc400 03-08-05, 09:31 AM "That is one hot Camry" is a phrase I didn't think I would ever utter but that is one hot Camry.
Wow, it doesn't look like your average Camry that you see around. Looking sporty. But what's up with the two tone side mirrors?
soarer1023 03-08-05, 11:00 AM always love the camry, and that just made me love camry even more, good find,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the US Toyota Camry 3.3 SE with 225 horses do a 0-60 in 7.0 seconds? If that supercharged Camry does just less than 7.2, then... :uh:
According to Toyota's Australian website, there's no 3.3 available. My other guess is that the supercharger is running fairly low boost because we all know that high hp+ fwd does not often make too good of a serious driver's car; especially when based off of a Camry.
I don't really like the wheels but the 5 speed and enhanced performance are great. If I had a choice however, I would get a TRD supercharged Solara.

I like it, looks very agressive.
1SICKLEX 03-08-05, 02:04 PM I like the current Camry with the TRD kit and BBS 18s they sell. Sharp looking car for a family sedan. This Aussie Camry is pretty hot!  GREAT find!!
gsWarrior 03-08-05, 07:09 PM still needs a drop but nice to see Toyota changing it up
That looks damn good! It appears they put the "old" 1MZFE motor in so they could boost it with a TRD SC and keep teh factory warranty. They must be running it on regular gas. I'm pretty sure you can squeeze a few more horses out of that combination :D
The current Gen 5 is the best looking Camry to date. Especially with the body kit and 18 in BBS.
redkingjoe 03-08-05, 10:23 PM to tell the truth, i like the "look" of camry much more than the es.

flipside909 04-25-05, 05:20 PM Wow I like it! Coming from a former founder of the largest Camry Club in America at one point in time....i'm impressed! :eek2:

The TRD USA Eaton M62 s/c doesn't work with the MCV20 RHD models. There is clearance problems with the TRD S/C's pulley assembly and the actual steering column.

Yes the 3MZ-FE in the Camry SE V6 and Solara SE V6 models can do upper 6 second range 0-60 time.
Even my old 1999 Solara SE V6 5spd Manual 1MZ-FE V6 w/200hp can do 0-60 about 0.2 seconds quicker.
mmarshall 04-25-05, 06:04 PM Some auto mags did a write-up on this car.....I remember reading about it a couple of weeks ago, but for some strange reason the articles are not on websites. I will post the articles I read if I can find them.
flip.............if I knew you were going to drool THIS much over the car, I would have posted what little I found on it.
AJL0365 04-25-05, 06:10 PM as a camry owner, i can truely say that this is the best one i ever seen, the wheels looks like the sportdesign wheels on the sportdesign ES. but anyways love the car! its awesome, just add more hp and bring it to the states and compete with the mazda madzaspeed6, and maybe the suburu WRX and Mitishibushi EVO

Compete with the Mazdaspeed6? Yes. An Evo or WRX? No..........not in my opinion. Granted, I am not an expert on the car... have only read a little about it......but this car is much longer than either the STi or Evo, will not have the manuverability, does not have the advantage of AWD, and is not starting from a rally-bred platform.

According to Toyota's Australian website, there's no 3.3 available.
The Camrys at this end are all manufactured and imported from Australia, so the Australian and Middle Eastern Camry is essentially the same, with slight differences in trim level names and options (e.g. RHD/LHD). They come in 4 different trim levels (XLi, GLi, Touring and Grande) 2 of which (XLi and GLi) come with the 2AZ-FE 2.4L in-line 4 and the Touring and Grande models coming with the 1MZ-FE. The 3MZ-FE is unavailable (ES-Series also comes with the 1MZ-FE) except on the RX-Series which is the only vehicle equipped with the 3MZ-FE. I was asking about his earlier, but it just seems to be a regional decision. Is there a majorly noticeable difference when driving one equpped with the 3MZ-FE?
Apparently they were just released over here in Australia.
The one that I'm really liking is the Camry Sportivo (remember, we don't get the Solara over here in Australia). And yes we get jipped of performance cars here in Australia (what's new). One thing I'm really not feeling though is the front end of the supercharged Camry. I wouldn't mind a Camry Sportivo with the supercharger fitted up though ;)
Lexusfreak 04-26-05, 07:50 AM I'd still take a 2005 Camry V6 SE with the 3.3L V6 personally. Or just wait until next year for the next gen Camry with the new 3.5 V6!
