Porsche is planning to produce a petrol-electric version of the Cayenne off-roader using hybrid technology purchased from Toyota. Speaking at the Detroit show, chairman Wendelin Wiedeking said Porsche wanted to boost the Cayenne’s appeal through hybrid technology.
‘At the moment it is the only way to meet future emission regulations,’ he said. The hybrid Cayenne would likely use a 3.3 V6 and electric motor producing 270bhp — the same system Toyota is preparing to launch the Lexus RX400h.
Wiedeking wouldn’t elaborate on Porsche’s long-term plans, although he admits the German car maker is not in a position to fund an expensive hybrid development program on its own.
At the same time, Wiedeking scotched rumours that Porsche was considering the technology for the 911 or Boxster.
So Toyota now that you own the entire world, what are you gonna do next?!
I figured they'd use a Synergy Hybrid Drive DERIVED system, but not the exact 3.3L V6 and all! I would venture to guess Cayenne consumers would want some form of V8 engine to go with increased price but I'm not arguing, go Toyota.
I wonder how Porsche is gonna price the hybrid Cayenne now that it isn't even powered by Porsche. No way people are gonna pay the same premium they're paying for the regular Cayenne.
BTW, Sick, the link to the original article doesn't work. Would you fix it for us please? Thanks.

Sure they will. They're already paying a premium for equipment they can get in a VW Touareg. Besides, I doubt it will be marketed as 'Yota powered. Even so, look at your average Cayenne driver...you think they would know/care? It could be powered by an obese hampster...They just want an SUV with a Porsche badge for $45K.

plus it's still a Porsche chassis for those who care.

This might be good, German chassis with Toyota reliabilty (somewhat)
Almost all non-car enthusiasts just look at the badge and don't dive in details of the car.
i told my friend who just got his Cayenne S know about this news, and man ... you guys should have heard the disbelief and tone. He just cannot believe and doesnt want to believe that Toyota makes good stuff, good enough to be in P-cars.

go toyota!!
Yeah, well, Toyota ownz him too whether he realizes/likes it, or not.
I don't think Porsche had a choice. Toyota probably said, "Either buy our hybrid or we'll buy the 997."
Seriously, I think Toyota *might* be doing this so they can legimately bring "performance" hybrids to market and reference the Toyota power in Porsche products for added credibility.
