I've also read a LOT about people complaining about poor focus on higher end DSLRs like my Canon 20D or 1D and I thought it was poor too until the above PLUS learning the fact that the in camera sharpening decreases as you go upmarket even with the same 'parameter' settings. In other words, if you go upmarket, expect to do more in computer processing (especially sharpening or unsharp) of pictures. My tiny Canon S400 delivers amazing sharp shots in good light - it basically sucks in poor light though. My Canon 20D can deliver shots in poor light the S400 doesn't have a chance in, but whether poor light or full light, some in computer processing is usually needed to match the tack sharpness I get from the S400 P&S (point and shoot).
