Check out the Sony Cybershot; I was so against going digital, but one day I said "I'm going to learn this sucker". Sat down w/ the manual and started playing around. We're building a new house, and I've taken well over 400 shots, downloaded to the computer, burned it, took it to Costco and re-use the memory stick! No more film, no more not knowing if the pics came out. It's so easy, trust me!

I too was a little tentative at first when I purchased my first digital camera a few years back. However, I absolutely love it. You will have a tough decision to make because there are so many digital options for you to choose. The two links provided are a good start. I used and recommend dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/) as well. I ended up purchasing a Sony Cybershot and I cannot put the thing down.

Good luck in your search.

I personally like the small Canons - they're all good, and fast in operation.

There's so many models now though from Canon, just check dpreview.com (although that may be too high end a site) or check reviews and feedback on amazon.com. For $300 you've got a TON to choose from.

My own opinion is to get one with a Lithium Ion battery and not one that uses rechargeable NiMH batteries (usually AA size) because the latter requires you buy a charger and batteries and they just don't last as long or hold their charge when the camera's not in use like the Lithium Ion ones do.

But at $300, many models from Canon, Sony, Casio, and Pentax will be good, among others, maybe Olympus too is in that price range.

I did tons of research and Canon reminds me of Lexus when it comes to cameras......

From my own experience, if you plan to purchase a Sony digital camera, you're going to first of all pay more for it compared to other Cameras (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc.) Second of all, Sony's memory stick are more expensive too compared to others (Secure Digital, xD, Compact Flash, etc.) Sony has great lens though (Carl Zeiss) and they have their own innovative styles and usually small and compact. Another thing I've noticed is Sony has large LCD, usually 2.5 inches (Other manufacturers are also starting to have large LCD as well). I have a Sony digital camera because for some reason I'm a Sony fanatic. From Sony TVs, CD player, camcorder, and including a Sony Cybershot. But other cameras are nice as well, especially the majority of Canon cameras. Just my 2 cents :)

i've been using a lot of casios lately and have no complaints from there brand. I've had the exilim z3 z40 and now i have the z50 and i loved them all. i wouldnt really say i'm a digital photo guru but from what i do know they work well to me. And i work in radioshack and the casio's trump all the other cameras we have for sale

I've got 3 Olympus and 1 Canon. My Canon S500 is by far the most compact of them all, but I enjoy shooting with my Olympus much better. I take better pics with it. The Olympus Camedia C720 is definetly in that price range and offers a ton of adjustability, 3 meg pics, video with sound, 10x OPTICAL zoom (very rare in smaller cams), very reliable, and easy to shoot with.

I just bought an Olympus SLR 8 meg which I like a lot. I highly recommend the Olympus line.
