It is funny, but this car has the porsche world upside down. Ive heard ring times of approximately 8.40 (im recalling from memory). This car will out handle the 911, but it just doesnt carry the panache as the 911 name.
Here is an interesting angle from an NSX owners discussion. Porsche with the Cayman S practically build their own version of the NSX. Think about it. It is a 295 HP mid engine car. NSX-T is a 290 HP mid engine car. Both are low 3K lbs. Price wise when it is all said an done will be fairly close. NSX uses a 3.2L V6, Cayman a 3.6L flat 6. 0-100 is about 4.9-5.0 seconds for the NSX. 0-100 is reported at about 5.4 for the Cayman. Porsche claims their prototype lapped the Nurburring North circuit at 8:11. 3.2L NSX-T times are 8:17, NSX-R did it in 7:56, and the 91 3.0L NSX did it in 8:38. Some were reporting 8:40 range for production Caymans, but I think it will be closer to the 8:11 prototype times. Anyway, the question now is the NSX really underpowered or is the Cayman S really all that? Now, I like the Cayman S. If I get a Porsche I would pick this one over a 911 simply for the mid engine which I love. This is the direction I'm glad to see Porsche heading in. The question is, should Porsche have done better with this car? After all, it simply is about on par with the NSX that so many publications think is under powered. I say good for Porsche, but I'm just throwing out that question.
CLK...I'm glad you brought that up because I think the answer is YES. It was very interesting but I can't remember if it was either EVO or CAR did a comparison between a Boxster and 911 (NON-S), and on the track, the Boxster was actually a few tenths of a second FASTER than the 911. This was attributed to the mid-engine setup which balances the car out nicely whereas the 911 rear-engine bias is trickier to master. However, both drivers reported that the 911 is the way to go just for the shear thrill factor.
The low 8.11 times you mentioned IMO will be much faster once the tuners get their hands on this...possibly even faster than 911-s variants.
