nice pics. The first one has a good compostion because you have the handler at the bottom right. Helps show the scale of the Killer whale.
the second knda loses the effect because there are so many similiar colors: grey, blue, white. Nothing makes the dolphins stand out of the picture.

Nicely timed shots! Ideally you'd be zoomed in a bit more on both I'd say.
This is a crop of one I took years ago at SeaWorld.

Well, my pic was taken with a 3.3MP camera with 3x zoom (nothing special today) but as I said I cropped and scaled the original to make the composition a bit better (IMHO). You can do the same too. For example, on the one with the 4 dolphins you might try cropping out some of the pool to the left so the dolphins look 'bigger' (or fill up more of the remaining pic anyway). Editing can make up for a multitude of sins. :D

yeah, i've been meaning to go through and edit all my photos. however i don't have a copy of Photoshop handy.
i'm not a big fan of filling up the picture with the subject, my pictures have been better ever since i started trying to take pictures with better composition

:) I don't use Photoshop. It might be worth the $ to some but it's complex and massive overkill for 99% of what people do with digital photos. Photoshop Elements 3.0 isn't bad (and a fraction of the price), which I have, but it's REALLY slow (as is Photoshop) compared with ACDsee 7.0 (lightning). I also have Paintshop Pro 9 which is very nice. The combo are way less than Photoshop and also very powerful.

I agree on not filling up the whole picture with the subject - like many things, subtlety is important unless you're going for a specific effect. Problem with digital pics posted to the web though if the subject is small portion of the picture and the whole picture is scaled to a small size then I often feel like just too much was lost in the process.
If you want to e-mail me an original or bigger than you posted, I'd be glad to take a shot at cropping for ya. bit_kahuna@yahoo.com. :)

thanks bitkahuna! you're right. pic looks much better already. i just wanted to resize them and throw them on my website, so i haven't cropped or edited them other than that...

I also did some exposure and sharpening adjustments which made the image 'pop' a bit more. I didn't position them dead center, and I left some of the rocks and the other pool in shot to make the background a bit more interesting but not dominating compared to those great looking dolphins!
