View Full Version : I really Love My GS430...CLS500 Bites It.
nate579 07-05-05, 08:52 PM Wow, Can't believe a CLS500 just blew it's chunks at a intersection in my neighborhood. Some guy with a couple ladies sporting it with dealer tags still on it. Now normally I don't do stoplight races, but this guy was whispering to his "ladies" and looking over at me laughing. I am not going to get punked and knowing the specs on the CLS I figure I have a chance if I can get the jump. Light turns green and off we went I pulled on him until halfway down the block "Blue Smoke of Death" was coming from underneath his car. He pulls over and you can see oil just pouring from underneath the engine. I turned around to see if I can help, well he called a tow truck with my phone. Apparently the phone didn't work in his 60k+ car. Well, he just picked it up at the dealer that morning. Offered them a ride home but I think he was too embarrassed to accept. Kinda felt sorry, right now his MB is a piece of artwork on back of a AAA tow truck. Beautiful car though. Great vehicle if you leave it parked. I have heard nothing but horror stories on this cars but they are nice looking. Again I love my GS430 reliability and power.
*Please no flames for the childish behavior but a EGO is a terrible thing to waste*
e-diddy 07-05-05, 08:57 PM Oh, that was a great story. I just love to hear how the competition gets burned.
Way to smoke em
I am no speed racer myself, but you got to do what you got to do.
Oh, yeah............. he whom laughs last laughs best :D

Sounds like you should have left with the ladies!!

98LexusGS 07-05-05, 09:55 PM No way. I really wish you had pictures. I keep on telling my girlfriend that those cars are nothing but trouble. Get this - her sister in law just bought a brand new ML 350 and 2 weeks later the CEL comes on. She goes to the dealer and they offer to give her a C class as a rental. She was so embarassed to drive it. Secondly, they "fix" it and the CEL comes on right when she pulls into her driveway. To add salt to the wound, she gets a letter from MB telling her that her car is part of a steering assembly recall. I don't know what kind of plant their running down there in Alabama but it is really piss poor with QC. The mystery of it is that they don't really know why the CEL comes on. Let's just say that I'm sitting there in her driveway telling her "I told you so" with a huge grin on my face. Amazingly my girlfriend still wants a Benz (I made her buy a 2005 RX 330).
Just about all Mercedes now are plagued with problems no matter where they are made but the ML is notorious for using cheap materials and being poorly built and unreliable. It is ashame because Mercedes makes very elegant beautiful cars with great interiors with no mistaking that they are luxury cars. Mercedes cars are very overpriced though especially considering the horrid reliabiltiy of these cars lately. People still buy them because they are status symbols and generally considered the top luxury brand and have alot of desireability but no way should you be having problems with a car you spent so much money on. I am sure that guy never broke his CLS engine in since it is so new and probrably has raced a bunch of people with it until the engine just seized up. You should have asked him what he was whispering to the girls or maybe ask the girls what he was whispering. It was nice of you to try to help him out even after he was probrably talking trash trying to impress the girls and wanted to show off by beating your car.
nate579 07-06-05, 03:39 AM Ironically, my wife has a 99 CLK 320 she bought used. She wanted a new one but I convinced her that $20k is lot better than 40k. I refused to drive the car. I was considering asking him what he was wispering to the ladies, whom by the way looked as skanky as Paris Hilton but let it slide. I think he was embarrassed enough. I checked MB forum and the list of problems on the CLS goes on forever and yet they love their cars. Seems like electrical problems is the number QC issue on them.
The Mrs. loves driving my car though and is considering trading *UP* to a GS430. :woot:
dmodstl 07-06-05, 03:50 AM Beautiful car though. Great vehicle if you leave it parked.
The owner doesn't have much choice now does he?
bmgs400 07-06-05, 06:48 AM I agree the new MBs S and CLS series are nice looking. They also have shown some obvious design flaws. I'd see 1 out of 5 NEW S or CLS with a brake light stuck on...glaring bright red... or a rear running light out. Sick...just sick MB. A friend back in NH has a S600 with 20" chromed wheels...I wasn't that impressed with the car...too many gadgets inside...reminded me of an Olds Toronado.
nate...too bad the ladies didn't jump in with ya.
Gojirra99 07-06-05, 07:21 AM Best story I' ve heard in a while   :D
joshoowa 07-06-05, 09:03 AM a friend from down my street has a brand new sl600...20" staggered amg kit etc... its mean i have yet to ask him if anything has gone bad but from what i can tell hes gutting that car out... i usually see him peel out at this street light right out of my neighborhood.
blacksc400 07-06-05, 11:03 AM Funny!! That why I love my Lexuses... most reliable in the world! :D
liquidsilver 07-06-05, 12:21 PM One of my friends purchased 2000 ML (brand new) and they had so much problems with the truck that they got rid of it after 3 years. Now somebody they knew told them that it's probabaly because it's 4X4 and usually trucks have more problems then cars. What a dumbass!!
So they go to the MB dealer and picked up a brand new E320 and now after a year or so they are regretting that they've went with MB again. On her E320 the HID light went out about 3 times now and other electrical and A/C failures on regular basis.
Some people will never learn and will never listen either.
That was a great story. At the rate MB is going, I think Ford will pass them up in the quality department and that 's really

Our 2004 F-150 FX4 has been treated like crap and has had ZERO flaws.
I raced a 00 audi a8 the other night, I thought I was going to lose, but was hoping that the quattro would slow it down enough. I beat him, we got up to 60 and I had a car length ahead of him. it was nice..
Technics 07-06-05, 08:06 PM That's crazy man, how ironic. Good story.
Our 2004 F-150 FX4 has been treated like crap and has had ZERO flaws.
Consider yourself lucky. My brother's 03 F150 had to get a new engine after 3K miles :egads:
Did you say "Ladies need a ride?" :p
LEXUS_KID 07-06-05, 09:23 PM Now thta's what I'm talkin about
kingkong5 07-06-05, 10:06 PM Did you say "Ladies need a ride?" :p
or "yo, ladies, why don't you ditch the zero and get with a hero?"
LXOGOOD 07-06-05, 11:02 PM nate579: I'm going to move this thread to the car chat forum since it really has nothing to do with a GS. It's more about a new CLS500 breaking down...
I don't think that Benz are that bad...
Had a 98 SLK230K, was alright til I got crashed into....
Dad has a 2000 CLK430, minor issues but over all very good.
Mom has a 2004 SL500...drove that for about two months, and I got to tell ya, this thing is just smokin fast and with 20k miles, no issues.
And about smoking an A8, WOW! Got my A$$ handed to me when I raced my brothers A8L.
bizzy928 07-06-05, 11:35 PM *Please no flames for the childish behavior but a EGO is a terrible thing to waste*
Great story but try not to endager others that are sharing the road.
LEXUS FAN! 07-07-05, 12:09 AM that was nice of you to stop
damn that sux for him. id be pissed and get a lemon buy back.
On another note. Im on my second MB and have ordered the new ML. my current ML has given me 1 problem, a broken window switch fixed under warranty. So i think its a gross generalization that all MB's cause problems, cuz my father has yet to have a problem with his CL65 and had none with his S55.. Mb's not that bad to be honest. Also the dealer has treated me extremely well. Maybe im just lucky? :uh:

What? I'd never be embarassed to be driving the C-class over a ML ...
Isn't the C still manufactured in Germany?
I mean, if you're going to buy a maintenance nightmare, at least drive one of the cars with the least history. The ML sucks hard. Even the '06.

The A8 is such a sex machine though. I was commenting to a friend earlier how, it's one of the few cars in production that makes me say "daaaaamn that's such a hot car" everytime I see one. The current GS is also one of those cars because I've only seen a few on the road and it looks so great.

gs430jw 07-07-05, 11:00 AM Great Story, I love the design of the CLS but there's no way it worth $20,000 more than my 430. Everyone always says never buy a 1st Gen Benz.
That's why I would only buy an AMG...
pvmike1 07-07-05, 10:05 PM That's why I would only buy an AMG...,
Keith,
I agree - AMG engines and trannys are overbuilt. So I guess your C32 has been treating you well? That's good to hear.
Mike

Sorry to hear that about your brother's 2003 F-150. The 2004 though was a complete redesign with different engine. It just won AutoWeek's best truck (again) and it's still the highest selling vehicle of any kind in the U.S.
98LexusGS 07-08-05, 12:43 AM On my comment regarding the C Class, my girlfriend's sister in law and their family have always had Benzes. They just think that the C Class doesn't classify as a true "Benz".. Their bottom limit in defining Benzes are E classes. This is coming from a family that has had every type of high end Benz imaginable (SL 600 - the 2 door kind, S600 V12 Brabus), and they're real snooty about it too. It's actually quite a collection and the AMGs are AWESOME cars. The one I really like is the Brabus V12, you don't see them anywhere. She bought the ML cause she has 2 kids and has become quite a "soccer mom". Well, I converted one of them (my girlfriend) to Lexus so I guess I'm doing my job. We're like the oddballs in that family - they accepted me once when I had an S600 (but later got rid of due to many electrical problems).
GS300Rich 07-08-05, 03:34 PM props to you for turning around and helping the guy out.

I think that snooty nature also has something to do with the American "bigger is better" mentality when it comes to vehicles especially. I can't imagine us having some of the smaller lux-brand vehicle offering here like they do in the U.K., for example. Streets are tighter over there and space from what I understand is at a premium. Give us another 100 years...at the current rate of urban sprawl, we will be embracing those little cars. :D
Glad to hear that ou were nice to him and it's quite a relief I just talked my entire family out of a CLS, although they are sooo good looking. Me being 6'3", I couldn't even to begin to dream about fitting in the back seat. For looks and performance from the AMG though, I think the CLS is one excellent choice.
James
wow that sux man.... i guess he didn't follow the right break in procedure and rev the engine too hard when the car is so new? very sad..... probably he has to pay premium too..... sigh....
but it's very nice of you man
