My friend just got a ticket for doing 86 in a 55mph zone :egads: and doesnt know what to do. The ticket is $650 and 6 points all together. He got two seperate tickets, one for not putting on his blinker while he was changing lanes and the 86 in a 55. Should he find a Ticketclinic or a traffic lawyer or should he show up to court or whatever :uh: . Im asking you guys bc i know how smart you guys are :) .

i would probably just get an attorney if he doesn't know what to do. i have no idea where you are and what 6 points mean to you, but here in cali, that means the license is gone already
and just for the record, 86 in 55, that 31mph over limit. technically here in cali he could have been put in jail and car impounded

Get a attorney....a good one. In California it could have been a misdemeaner. This is pretty serious. Also his insurance will skyrocket.

I would say just pay the ticket and try to do some traffic school.

Never get an attorney for a traffic ticket unless you injure or kill someone. Pay the fine and go to traffic school. Trust Me :D

why is that?
the attorney will really help out no matter how serious the situation...
i got a ticket for not yeilding to oncoming traffic while making a left turn... 3 points $150.
lawyer said some weird stuff like the bushes on the left side of the vehicle hindered the driver's ability to see oncoming traffic therefore causing poor judgment of the turn blah blah blah...
judge was like " alright thanks bernard. You may leave now Mr. Kim."
hahaha twas awesome...
but in your friend's case, it's going to be much more serious because its 31 mph over the speed limit... really reckless driving... in philly 6 points means license gone and you really can't argue off the speeding ticket because there is no mistake there... it's simple recklessness.
but get an attorney and find out what your options are and do whatever he can do to lower the points, community service, traffic school etc.
he's going to have to pay the fine... he might be able to get it lowered but he's going to have to pay a ticket in that ballpark.

Yea, I'm not sure how things work where you live... but you're not always eligible for the driving class option in Illinois. Especially if you were going 31 over the speed limit... thats wreckless driving in many states. In Missouri, especially, you ALWAYS get an attorney to fix tickets. Some attorneys make a living off doing that purely. You can even get off of a DUI for about $5,000 (fee to the attorney, additional fees to the court).
I'd highly suggest your buddy get a lawyer. Since this was such a big ticket, he may not be able to make it go away completely, but chances are the lawyer will be able to play down the offense to a lesser one. You don't want a ticket like that on your record, your insurance will be very high for a long time.

what's this point system?
are you being serious?
you recieve a certain number of points depending on how serious whatever it is that you did.
i think in most states the max number of points a license can receive is 6 points.

Brian, this point system hasn't made it to all of the states yet. I didn't know about it either till a few years ago when I went to college and met someone from Michigan. I had of course met people from other states before that, but the topic of drivers licenses never really came up :)

I thought he was talking about insurance points. Massachusetts doesn't have that point system for your liscence. I never heard of it either.
Why would you get a Lawyer? The fees will be much more than the $650 ticket.
Doesn't everyone go 80-90 mph in a 65 anyway? Usual flow of traffic everywhere I drive.

sheesh...i don't know what it is...i am only 16...i have not even had my license for a year
i was referring to the 6 point thing that the guy got...i don't know what the insurance one is or this one
i personally think your friend should own up to what he did, and take responsibility for it...in the end he will pay more for the lawyer anyways.

This guy was doing 86 in a FIFTY FIVE, not 65. Thats 31 mph over, an arrestable offense in most states.

I agree. He was speeding and got caught so just pay up. 31 over is alot and he is lucky his car wasnt impounded or arrested.

The fees may not neccessarily be over 650.... i've seen attorneys fix speeding tickets for as little as $50. Just depends on who he goes to..... I had a Minor in Possession taken care of for 200, a driving too fast for conditions fixed for $300 (I was actually driving 15 miles under the speed limit... it was just bad weather). I think in the long run, if your insurance rate goes up every month.... you will end up spending much more than a one time lawyer fee. Tell him to at least consult with an attorney, many will give you a free consult.

I know it was 55mph. Just saying that by going 85-90 in a 65 is still 20-25mph over and that is typical.

HOW did the police determine he was actually doing 86? ( if you know ). How this was done, the accuracy of the equipment used, how recently it was calibrated, the officer's certification with that equipment, the presence of anything else in the area that could have interfered with an accurate reading.....these and other factors could deterimne how strong a case the police ( or the county prosecutor ) have.
But, of course, I am only thinking of your friend and a way he could legally question it. In truth, your friend probably deserved it.

I got one here in GA for going 81 on a 55, I thought i was on the hwy but happened to be in this 5 mile access road.. anyways it was like $170 and 4 points, as they mentioned, this guy is lucky, 31 over limit here would have gotten him in jail and car impounded, I would just pay and move on

Going over 80MPH is starting to become the magic number. In my state they either are passing or have already passed a law that going anything over 80 MPH becomes a traffic crime, and going over 25 MPH above the any speed limit will also be a traffic crime. That means your car is impounded and you are arrested. It may be the norm now, but as time goes by there will be more laws against excessive speeding. Like or or not its only a matter of time.

1Sicklex, do you know the point rule for people under 21? I've heard since I received my first ticket here that if I get another ticket before next November (when I turn 21), my license will/can suspended for 6 months. Is that true? I can't find it on the DMVS website....thanks....

Unless they passed a new law, b/c I have not heard of that one. I do know if your caught going I think 25mph over the limit and your under 21, your license does get suspended 6 months. I KNOW. The law passed in July, I got hit with a ticket right when the law passed, the lawyers and judges had no clue about it. 1 month after my court date, I got a letter saying "license is revoked".
I know if you get more than 15 pts in 2 years, you license is revoked.
You can take 1 defensive driving course every 5 years, it deducts 7 points from your license.
You can plead nolo your first offense and once every 5 years. This gives you no points, but u pay a fine.
After 2 years your tickets points are removed.

30 mph over, they can grow you in jail.
over 100mph, thrown in jail unless your lucky and reckless driving as well.

Basically, I heard if I receive 4 or 6 points before I turn 21, my license will be revoked.
Edit: I found the info on their website

HOLY **** @ 70 mph over. In NY i'm pretty sure they'll haul you off to jail even for 50+, which officially is what you did. Here's how the NY system breaks down. Speeding 40+ over the limit in NY is grounds for the officer to hit you with 16 points at once on your license. And in NY, if you get 11 points within 18 months, your license is revoked for 6 months.
