DETROIT -- Nissan Motor Co. is gearing up to put continuously variable transmissions into four out of every 10 vehicles it sells in the United States by 2008.
That will represent at least 400,000 cars and trucks. Worldwide, Nissan wants to sell 1 million CVT-equipped vehicles by the same period, up from about 300,000 last year.
To prepare for the technology push, Japanese transmission maker Jatco Ltd. is spending more than $300 million to build a CVT factory in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Nissan owns 82 percent of Jatco.
I think this is a great investment and kudos to them.

I'm all for CVT's......especially if they can get the drive belts ( the traditional weak points ) to last longer and take more power.....but IMO Nissan had better get the problems at the Canton, MS plant worked out before they start any expensive new ventures in Mexico.
dumb question here (dont know much about cars stats) but i know the RX and highlander hybrids models have a CVT tanny? exactly what does CVT do? it doesnt shift gears or something? just trying to learn new things
