USC has shown that their defense is penetrable. Texas, if any team, certainly has the fire power to do so. USC on the other hand, has the same firepower to take against the UT defense.
As of now, the Trojans are a 6 point favorite in this game, and as a betting man, I am betting that the spread will not be covered. I think UT will pull it out and be national champions this year.

I don't like either of these teams personally but if I was a betting man, make it a three-peat for USC. The game is practically in their back yard and no one has been able to stop Bush yet. Leinart has an off day and they still beat UCLA 66-14? Yeah, exactly. :)

College football has gained in "professionalism" what it may have lost in "spirit". Im not sure that's such a good thing. Most college players are now gunning for a pro career with an astronomical salary, rather than getting a marketable degree. I guess much the same can be said for all college sports. Kinda sad to see the big $ taking over for the real excitement of "amateur" sport.
The BCS needs overhaul, but it's been a noble effort. TV (Bowl) contracts bring millions to individual schools (and some $ to the NCAA), changing the nature of the college game. After Texas won the National Championship in 1963 (beating QB Roger Staubach's Navy team in the Cotton Bowl), the NCAA began to carve up the bowl bucks, seeking to distribute the big schools share of the winnings evenly amng smaller schools with less elaborate football programs.
The big football powers rebelled, threatening in an ad hoc meeting of the head coaches and AD's to form a Super Conference consisting of two roughly geographical divisions. Imagine a conference consisting of Miami, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, 'Bama, Tennessee, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, UCLA, and Washington, among others. These were the regular top 15 to 20 teams year after year. The thought was to break away from the NCAA and form their own conference - effectively killing TV contracts for all other schools, creating a media monopoly.
Some said it was never a serious idea, but it DID achieve its purpose - it backed the NCAA down from its "share and share alike" split of TV revenues. :uh:

Texas has yet to play any team of value this year besides a confused OSU...the Ohio State game was a joke as well because OSU couldn't figure out what to do on offense and who should be their QB. If Smith was at the helm for all four quarters USC would be playing Penn State for the MNC.

Anthony that is absolutely not true. FSU lost 3 games, some to pathetic opponents. Ohio State's 2 losses came against teams currently ranked ahead of them. #2 Texas in the opener, I think the score was 24-22 and then to #3 Penn State in Happy Valley (16-7). To equate this with what FSU has done this year does not bode well for your football insight.
I beleive the highest ranked team that USC beat was Notre Dame, who is much more suspect than Ohio State. And the win was lucky at that, Leinart's fumble goes 2 yards upfield they lose. And I wouldn't count UCLA as much of a challenge, watch them drop like a rock in the polls after not even showing up last Sat..

The teams you listed at the end - this year, in this season, are nowhere near the caliber of USC OR Texas. The only ones close are LSU. GA, and ALA ...LSU lost to georgia so they aren't too great and im being generous here because of the BCS. Georgia and Alabama. had a good year and they would be a good challenge for Texas but I'm sure Texas would put the hurt on them.
UF is ok this year, FSU SUCKS, UCLA LOL, VT = overrated cause of Marcus Vick..they lost to FSU haha.

Texas beat Ohio State at an Away game no excuses there. They have the huge advantage as a home team, (PLUS A HUGE RIVALRY!) They lost fair and square. You generally can't take great football rivalries into account when evaluating a team's performance. Texas / Texas A&M has been an intense rivalry for over 100 years, combining equally-sized and matched schools and a powerful rivalry between student bodies. Like Auburn / 'Bama, Georgia / Georgia Tech, and USC / UCLA, these teams can be expected to play well over their heads when they meet on the gridiron. It's often said that if A&M loses every game on the schedule, but beats Texas at Thanksgiving, it's been a successful season. :)

Why not Texas? They are just too cocky a bunch to deserve what a win would give them...anyway, if our streak was going to end at least it's in the MNC game...while if Texa$$ doesn't lose now they will next year when tOSU visits Austin.
Unfortunately, spectacular games against mediocre pathetic-12 teams don't do much for me...if they can play with 'SC hat's off to them, but until then...the whorns suck!

Notre Dame palyed a great game, but they deserved to lose. You can't be giving up 64 yards on a 4th and 9, especially when you win the game if you stop them. Then, you can't STOP the qb on the 1 yard line with your initial hit, just to let him get a second effort for the TD simply by rolling to the side and falling into the end zone. USC did what they had to in that game to win, and ND defense just couldn't deliver on that 4th and 9.
And I don't know WHERE you guys come in saying that the 4th will be a blowout. Please, I would like to see what you have to say when this turns out to be a hell of a game :p

Duly noted Mike! I guess they will still need to play the game and anything can happen. Nothing is ever guaranteed in sports...NOTHING!
Mike, your on if I get the point spread..LOL!
Notre Dame palyed a great game, but they deserved to lose. You can't be giving up 64 yards on a 4th and 9, especially when you win the game if you stop them.
This was a very lucky play for USC. The coverage was there and it was a pass play (toy4two) not a running play. And if you watch closely the ND player turned around just a second late and the ball still barely cleared being blocked by his hand. Had he turned around a split second sooner or moved his hand less than a few inches that ball would have fallen incomplete. Don't believe me, go check the re-play. Plus this doesn't even count Leinart's fumble out of bounds, if it goes less than 1 yd downfield it is an automatic touchback and the ball is ND's, streak over. You may think that ND deserved to lose, but by no means did USC deserve to win either. C'mon, they win by 1 but were favored by much more.
Like I said earlier, USC is a great team, but they are not unbeatable. That has been proven in many instances this year. To think Texas will be a cakewalk is being short-sighted. Sure they play 10 games USC probably wins 7 or 8. But they don't win 10, the question is on January 4th is which game will it be?

Texas really turned up the juice in the last 10 minutes of the first half. They got away with one on that pitch from Vince Young, he was down before he pitched it. USC got away with one there as well, and were lucky to get that field goal at the end. Leinart's pass was indeed intercepted. Possession was had by the Texas linebacker as he hit the ground, which immediately should've blown the play dead as an interception. Goes both ways I suppose, should be a VERY entertaining second half.

I want to see all you Texas lovers posting back in this thread after the championship game. I don't even think it will be close. USC is just going to stomp them like they've done almost everyone else the past 2 seasons. It's always funny to me how people seem to think a juggernaut is just all of a sudden going to fall because the stars and the heavens have lined up a certain way, that doesn't happen too often, and definitely not to a juggernaut like this current USC football team. This game will be boring unless you're into Reggie Bush highlights, USC will be killing them by the 2nd period.

People can complain about the knee being down all they want. But they overcame it to re-take the lead late.
USC had a 12 point lead with something like 6 minutes to go and then LenDale can't get the 1st down and the defense just gets its ass kicked the last 2 drives. To think that USC is a better team is wrong. Especially considering this was basically a home game for USC, this was not a neutral field.
Goes both ways Mike. Where will those USC fans be when their winning streak is stopped on the 4th?
Don't get me wrong, USC is a great team with some excellent playmakers. But they have not been as impressive as in past years and as they say, all good things must come to an end. Why not Texas?
Hey Mike, thought it wasn't even going to be close? What happened? Wow, twice in less than 12 months you're wrong. The 3rd charm will be when the Lakers miss the playoffs this year.
My original prediction wasn't too far off. I had it 38-28 Texas (see my post #26 on 12/5/05). USC was a great team, the streak is dead and USC will have it's work cut out next year.

Wow,
I've never experienced such pain from football game outcome....to see SC lose was and still pretty tough to stomach.
My hats off to Vince Young and the Longhorns....
No matter how you put it, it came down the person/team who had the ball last in their/his hands....there is simply no game plan that will cover a scrambling quarterback such as Vince Young....it should almost be outlawed...LoL
And like Lexism said, we gotta lose sometime.....sure 3 in a row would be nice, but hey, that's just the way the cookie crumbles...I'm just glad USC fought hard all the way to the end.....
And since Vince Young tnred up the juice last night, my Saints(who have the 2nd pick in the draft), may end up picking him up with a performance like that.....
And I'll say it again,
Texas won, and that's all that matters - no crying from me....

Exactly! They made so much progress on that drive they for sure would have pushed it in if they had to do it over. Plus (as the comentators noted) the officials and coaches had MORE THAN ENOUGH time to call a review on that play.

They did say they were having "technical difficulties" in the replay booth at that time. USC should have called a time out to allow them time to fix the problem.

My hat's off to Texas for the win...
I was there last night and have to admit that both offenses were dominating though Texas was more or less a one man show with Vince. I have mixed feeling about the refs and the poor job they did and wish that element of the game wasn't tied to the outcome for either team...but that is the nature of the game.
I had figured that this game would either be a blowout by USC or very close with either walking away at the end of the game...unfortunately it was the later.
'SC has had a great run of 34 straight and will just need to start a new dynasty next year since we are loaded again. Fight on! Trojans!

True indeed if they could have stopped Texas they would have won or if they had gotten the first down, they would have won. However, I do have to agree with SC fans on this one. The refs in the entire bowl season were suspect. I'm a Georgia Tech grad and we got beat fair and square..(we actually got the brakes beat off of us but that's another story for another day.) I wish the refs suspect calls in the national title game were not so obvious and wish they didn't have such an impact on the game. I just don't like it when the outside factor plays a role in the outcome of the game. I can recall two plays. (Young's knee down which wasn't reviewed and resulted in a TD, and the catch and fumble and turnover which was ruled incomplete---this one was close and could have went wither way, but I think the replay showed he clearly had possession and then lost it) Either way it was a good game and I can't wait to see what these guys do in the pros. They may end up sucking...who knows? Some guy from Mississippi River Valley Delta State may come in and be better than all of them. Hahahaha. It will be an exciting draft this year though.

I have to disagree with this. I don't think he had possesion long enough to make an "athletic" move, such as turning up the field. If he had turned around after the catch and then the ball was knocked loose, then SC would have had a turnover.
Moreover, USC had the chance to do big things in the first half. Instead, they only got 10 points. If they played the "perfect" game, then I think these controversies wouldn't have mattered. They couldn't stop Vince Young, period. It hurts....what was suppose to happen, happened. It was destined to....
Yes, it will be interesting this year in terms of the NFL Draft. Vince Young is a potential #1 Overall Pick....

You just made my point. The call could have went either way. You think it was not in possession long enough but I do, matter of opinion. And I agree, USC just couldn't stop Texas...bottom line. I'm not making excuses as I don't hold any loyalty to either of these teams; I'm just bringing up points that I hate occurred in the game, but that's the nature of sports. Like I said, it was a good game nonetheless. Do you think Vince will do well in the NFL as a quarterback? I hope so...One thing I do know is that he won't do the things he does now such as get hit and swat them off like flies. With that being said, Reggie Bush won't do what he does now either. Yes, Vince is a big guy, but come on, when Ray Lewis, Takeo Spikes, or D'angelo Hall get a hold of him...(ok I'm kidding about D'Angelo Hall....hahaha), it's not gonna be any of that bouncing off stuff. He's big, but not as big as Daunte Culpepper and he's fast and shift but not as fast and shifty as Michael Vick and these guys get blasted on a regular basis. However, e does combine the two very well, so it will be interesteing to see.

Yeah, you can say Leinert is a sour puss, but Reggie Bush and Matt Leinert visited Texas' locker room after the game and congratulated those guys....pay attention to the details on sportscenter. I'm not saying that Leinert's comments after the game were not a little sour, but you would be upset too if you lost a national title game and a shot at history. *******t, I'd still be cussing!!! hahahahaha. Anyway, I think both teams showed alot of respect and professionalism, which is what sports is really about. Let's be real, it's just a game and it's only meant for fun, but we make it too too too serious alot of the time.

To think that USC is a better team is wrong. Especially considering this was basically a home game for USC, this was not a neutral field.
...the streak is dead and USC will have it's work cut out next year.
The knee was only one of many missed calls that went Texas' way...I was there and saw all of them. Texas played very well offensively, specifically VY. Bad calls are a part of the game and it is not an excuse, just sad that it has to be played out that way between two very evenly matched teams. The fumble by Texas on their last drive was typical of the bad calls...it was clearly a fumble recovered by 'SC...end of game.
USC is a great team...34 win streak, 2 back-to-back national titles, 4 pac-10 conference titles in a row. What is not good about this team?
This is very far from a home game for USC...have you played in the Rose Bowl? I have and it is NOT a home game by any stretch...personally I don't even like the stadium...the coliseum is way better and IS home to USC. UCLA calls the RB home.
Do you follow college football? USC is loaded next year...it is not a rebuilding year for 'SC but rather a reloading year...we are going to have lots of depth at positions that hurt us this year, specifically on defense. On offense our entire line returns (starters from 2003), our starting (2003) rb returns, all our recievers return, our only loss is reggie, possible lendale, and ML. We have two very capable QB's behind him that were both 5* out of HS...our recruiting class will be top 5 again this year...where do we have our work cut out for us? Yes our OOC schedule is the toughest in the nation (Arkansas, Nebraska, and Notre Dame) and we play all 9 pac-10 schools next year, but I would fully expect us to lose maybe one game at the most, maybe even start a new streak.
We have lost only 4 games in 4 years by a total of 16 points...we aren't going anywhere except back to the top.
If Texas can keep VY for one more year they will have a great chance to repeat, but I doubt he stays...and if he leaves, OSU beats them in Austin early next year.
Fight On!

No one is sour...'SC lost and Texas won...all I wish is that the refs didn't contribute to the win or defeat of either of the teams...I was at the game...I sat through all the frickin badly timed TV timeouts, all the bad/missed calls, all the suspect replays or lack thereof...the fans had to scream to get the refs to look at replays...what a joke! We (as fans) should not have any impact on calls. period.
I am not bitter, it was a classic game much like the ND game this year...People are generally jealous when it comes to success and have been during USC's streak...and now Texas will get their turn at the pressure of being #1...
Also, you would be a little sour like ML if you were a true competitor and had just lost the national title game after only losing one other game in your entire collegiate career...though I wouldn't call it sour when he has the balls to go over to the Texas locker room and congratulate them on their championship. You think VY would have done the same?

:agree: even though Vince Young stock rose 10 points yesterday, I don't see him as a huge standout NFL quarterback. The day of the running/scrambling Qback has come and gone. Even the almighty Vick has proven the case that a primarily running qback does not win a NFL championship. Vick's saving grace is that he can air the ball out, albeit not overly accurate. Young WILL get drafted. He will probably be thrust into a QB position from the get go. And he will most likely go the route of Kordell Stewart......nowhere. Unless, he is moved to another position.
Young is big...and fast....WR anyone? Return specialist maybe?? :uh:
Just my .02 but I don't see a stellar NFL QB career in his future.

I disagree, I had the ability to look at most replays from a variety of angles. The fumble was a bang bang play that even after review was ruled incomplete. Yes, the Texas player for a very slight instance had the ball in his hands, but he did NOT make any moves and was hit right away on the ball causing it to come loose and be ruled incomplete. I had the ability to see this replay in both slow motion and real speed. To call this a "bad call" is 100% incorrect. There was nothing conclusive in the replay to overturn this. (I am not a fan of either team, just a football junkie)
This is very far from a home game for USC...have you played in the Rose Bowl? I have and it is NOT a home game by any stretch...personally I don't even like the stadium...the coliseum is way better and IS home to USC. UCLA calls the RB home.
Yes, dude, I know the Rose Bowl is not their home field, but come on, you look pretty foolish trying to say they didn't have any home field advantage when they are located just down the road while Texas has to cross how many state lines to get there? Your argument would be like saying Notre Dame doesn't have an edge if the game were played in Indianapolis (instead of South Bend) against say Nebraska. USC fans had a short car ride while most Texas fans had to take a plane to get there. USC definitely had an advantage, no if's, and's or but's.
Fight On!
Well I don't intricately follow USC's roster. But I do know it isn't as easy as you think to replace 2 Heisman Trophy winners (Leinart/Bush), LenDale White, and whomever else is leaving. I don't care how highly touted they are. OK, you will improve on Defense, but you will still need to score points and to think that you can just plug and play for Leinart, Bush, and White....well. Plus expectations and pressure can be a killer. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.
Best of luck to USC and I do agree this squad for USC was one of the greatest teams ever assembled in college football. For that they should be congratulated (along with their 2 National Championships).

[QUOTE=SC400Dude][QUOTE=Two-Times], and the catch and fumble and turnover which was ruled incomplete---this one was close and could have went either way, but I think the replay showed he clearly had possession and then lost it)
You just made my point. However, e does combine the two very well, so it will be interesteing to see.
i was thinking the exact same thing, no one could tackle this guy, but in the nfl the guys are bigger and the defenses are much faster. USC looked like they were running in slow motion

It will be very interesting on how Vince Young would do in the NFL. I've never seen anyone quite like him to be honest with you guys....he's big, fast, and a powerful runner. He's a different breed of running QB. He has a different style than Vick. Plus, the dude can throw the ball. He sure can hang in there in tight situations.
I predict that he is going to be very prolific in the NFL.
But don't count out Leinart and Bush just yet....sure they played their hearts out, but they are still damn good ball players. It sucks to lose, yes, but what they do next will determine what characters they are. Time will only tell.

I played football for USC...I know the game well and follow it religiously. That catch and fumble was exactly that...a fumble. The Texas player caught the ball with his hands outstretched, pulled it into his body, turned and took a step (hence a catch)...this isn't the NFL where he has to make a "football" move once he catches the ball. It was simply a bad call...I also watched the replay as well as the "live" play since a fan next to me had a TV in the stadium...it was a bad call. Big 10 refs suck...you can hear/read about it on every major sports channel/internet site. The calls throughout the game where an issue as well as the very poor clock managment by the refs. They would let 20 seconds pass before the 25 second clock would start, etc...not to mention the malfunction of the RB game clock and the refs inability to keep time. Would fixing any of this change the outcome...I don't know, maybe not. VY was on fire and this game came down to the last team with the ball (with time on the clock) would win.

How is the Rose Bowl home field advantage? Because we can commute 1.5 hours to get there? It is a neutral field that USC plays at once every two years except at possible Rose Bowl games. Texas had as many fans in the RB...who had the advantage? The Texas Exes probably have 30,000 members local in So. Cal alone...which is probably close to what USC has locally in terms of alumni. Texas even stated that they felt "at home" in the RB since they were just there the year before...USC hadn't been there since the 2004 season as well. The only advantage we had was that we got to practice at our own field on campus...which isn't always an advantage since you have everyone and their mother trying to come watch the practices and seek out autographs...it is a lot easier to be focused when you don't have those distractions. Would Indy be neutral for ND?...anything is better than their stadium in South Bend. Shoot why not play in West Lafayette. Yes, it would be more neutral...but comparing going to a cold Indianapolis versus going to a national championship game that happens to be the first in 36 years for a team in sunny So Cal...you can imagine why so many Texas fans came out to the game. There was no advantage except it was easier for USC folks to get to the RB...and how does that give the team an advantage. At the end of the day the stadium was 50/50 filled with fans from both teams, regardless of how they got there, they were there in force...with both student sections located in the opposite end zones, unlike a home game where they are on the 50. There was no advantage from a fan perspective and the stadium itself is not an advantage to the team. I don't get why people think it is such an advantage...???

Replacing Lienart will be more difficult than Bush, but then again we replaced Heisman winner Carson Palmer with Lienart...the starting RB from the 2003 season will be back after a medical reshirt (he started over Bush and Lendale)...I really have no fear that USC will score lots of points, but where we improve the most is at defense with almost all the key players returning. We will probably have the best linebacking core in the country for the next few years. I don't really see a huge drop in productivity overall, but rather a shift in scoring points versus holding teams to low scores. At the end of the day USC will continue to compete for national titles for years to come.
Best of luck to USC and I do agree this squad for USC was one of the greatest teams ever assembled in college football. For that they should be congratulated (along with their 2 National Championships).
Thanks! This was a great run...12-2 in 2002, 12-1 in 2003, 13-0 in 2004 and 12-1 in 2005...and we only lost those four games by an average of 3 points...it was an incredible run and I admit seems hard to follow, but Pete Carroll isn't your average college coach...he is probably already scheming how to get the rest of his 4* and 5* commits to reload his dynasty. Next year we should do no worse than what we did in the 2002 building year.

To say some here are making excuses is obvious...Funny I can point out a post about a $10 bet and a bench warmer cries wolf....
This loss did more than can be relayed in words to sc -- this loss will haunt more than one players' life and any perceived tenure in the NFL...job well done Longhorns!!
Via ESPN poll - state by state (except for one) picked that Vince Young would be the most effective player of the game...
In closing, what became of our right to free speech? Isn't that what our left coast pals march in the streets for anyway?

Um ya lol. You hit the nail on the head. For you to say that it wasnt home field advantage makes you look somewhat foolish. I mean come an no one from Texas could just hope in their car and drive to the game. They had to travel to get there, much much different.

Well Manny's being Manny again. Said yesterday on a Spanish speaking talk radio show he now wants to stay in Boston and has many friends on the team including his best friend Ortiz. He doesn't want to go to the National League or play for a team that won't contend for a championship whereas he always has that in Boston.

...and a guy from Texas telling me it should only take 45 minutes  ...sure it SHOULD only take 45 minutes but we are in LA...bet you weren't on the 405 -> 105 -> 110 -> 5 -> 2 ->134 in bumper-to-bumper traffic with me on Wednesday trying to get to the game...and it took almost as long getting home at midnight.
My co-worker is a Texas alumni and even he thinks the Rose Bowl was not an advantage to USC...all he kept telling me is that there are more Texas alumni in LA than USC alumni and since USC only has just over 180,000 alumni world-wide and Texas just under 500,000 I am sure he is right. He states 30,000 local alumni in So Cal alone. Also, I heard that the figure was 55,000 Texas fans out of 94,000 seats at the RB...Not much of an advantage there...maybe if any of you actually played division 1 college football AND played in the Rose Bowl you would understand what I am talking about.
I am not sour about the game...it was a game for the ages. Every streak comes to an end and we were well prepared for it. But to say that USC had advantages on the field at the Rose Bowl that Texas didn't is a joke...if we played at the Coliseum than I would agree.

LOL - we are talking about home field advantages...totally different topic than the game itself.
Sure, I don't like to lose more than anyone else does, but we did and we were expecting it to happen sometime soon since the streak couldn't go forever. No sour grapes here. #2 USC is 12-1...they had a great run.

Texas was well represented (60-40 in the stands) and they had a ton of people outside the Rose Bowl...freaking burnt orange everywhere...but the girls  dam they grow em nice down there

So honestly... how big of a screw up was that lateral pitch Reggie Bush pulled off? He costed them the game...SC had alot of chances to win - and didn't make the plays. Although its a team game, judging from that play I would blame him for the loss rather than Lendale not converting on 4th down
