Vick gets a win, but deserves discipline for cheap shot
BY DAVID TEEL
Newport News Daily Press
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Kevin Rogers took a stand. Question is, will someone in authority at Virginia Tech follow suit?
Rogers, the Hokies' quarterbacks coach, refused to bask in Monday's 35-24 victory over Louisville in the Gator Bowl. Instead, he tackled the afternoon's indelible moment: The inexcusable cheap shot Tech quarterback Marcus Vick took on a prone Louisville defender, All-America end Elvis Dumervil.
"Flagrant" and worthy of ejection, according to Rogers. "Embarrassing" to Vick and the program, he added.
Rogers couldn't be more right.
Head coach Frank Beamer wouldn't go that far. He rarely does. But Beamer, or if necessary his superiors, need to discipline Vick.
Harshly.
Publicly.
ASAP.
Yes, the season is over. But the images of Vick standing over the fallen Dumervil and driving his right cleat into the back of Dumervil's left knee late in the second quarter will not soon fade and should not go unpunished.
Wind sprints `til he pukes? Banishment from spring practice or the team training table?
Sorry, not good enough. At the very least, Tech ought to suspend Vick for the 2006 season-opener.
Cue the Vick apologists: The media picks on him because of his last name; football is a violent game; he was reacting to previous plays.
Pure, unadulterated nonsense. The younger brother of Pro Bowl quarterback and former Tech All-American Michael Vick is not a first-time offender who deserves a pass. He is a fine football player see the tape of Monday's second half for the latest evidence who has been a problem child since he departed Warwick High in Newport News, Va., for Blacksburg.
Liquor, marijuana, under-aged girls, flipping off fans at West Virginia.
"A no-character individual," Dumervil said as he left the stadium.
Too harsh, but can you blame the guy? He's the national defensive player of the year who's headed to the NFL after this, his final college game. Vick's stunt could have wrecked Dumervil's knee and cost him millions.
Odds are you've seen the play: Late in the second quarter, Dumervil tackles Vick cleanly after a 9-yard scramble. Vick pops up, pauses, and, with Dumervil flat on his stomach, stomps the back of his knee.
Inexplicably, the Big 12 officiating crew missed it. No flag. But Rogers saw it.
"I sure as hell did," he said. "There's no place for that in the game. It's embarrassing, and I think it misrepresents who he really is."
Maybe Rogers is right. Maybe Vick is good-hearted and reflective. But Vick is also maddeningly inconsistent. Indeed, after the game he was contrite, defiant and apparently dishonest.
"Sometimes out there on the field some things happen and, unfortunately, sometimes I don't know how to carry myself," the contrite Vick said. "That's all about coming back (for his senior season) being polished and becoming a better person."
The defiant Vick said, "It was an accidental play. Football is football."
And the apparently dishonest Vick said Dumervil "definitely" accepted his apology.
But Dumervil and Louisville officials said the players never spoke after the game. Tech officials then said Vick waited outside the Cardinals' locker room to no avail.
Regardless, Vick's contention that Dumervil accepted his apology speaks to a troubling notion: Vick still doesn't get it. He still believes he's above the rules.
Someone needs to cure him of that notion. Now.
"I hate like hell to be talking about this after we won the game," Rogers said.
Understood. Tech overcame an 11-point, fourth-quarter deficit with three late touchdowns. The 12th-ranked Hokies became the third team in program history to win 11 games (11-2) and made a compelling case for inclusion in the final top 10.
Individually, seniors such as tight end Jeff King, tailback Cedric Humes, center Will Montgomery, linebacker James Anderson and defensive end Darryl Tapp concluded sterling Tech careers with gold-plated performances. Offensive tackle Brandon Frye was outstanding in relief of injured Jimmy Martin; ditto cornerback Brandon Flowers after Jimmy Williams' first-quarter ejection for bumping an official (a sad conclusion to his All-American career).
And Marcus Vick completed six of eight second-half passes, many in the how'd-he-do-that? category, for 110 yards and a touchdown. Alas, the other side of Marcus emerged.
"It hurts him, it hurts our program," Rogers said.
Does it taint a benchmark victory?
"For me," Rogers said, "it does."

I don't know... it doesn't look all that intentional, but I have no idea what was going through his head. The question that I have is why would he step on someone like that after making a routine tackle? Its not like the tackle was harsh or anything outlandish... it was just another hit. I'm not a Marcus Vick fan, or a fan of Mike Vick for that matter, but I think they are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Things happen during and after a tackle that could look intentional but usually are accidental. ANYONE who has played the game of football can tell you that.

this is the first i've heard of this as well.
i'm with Stage3.. i'm not really a Vick's fan anyway. however, there is no reason to do that after you tackle somebody like that... and karma is a b****
not a Mike Vick fan anyway.. he'll always get injured in some way because of the way he plays. yea, his plays are spectacular but he's prone to injuries by being a running quarterback. we're better off with Tomlinson

As a Virginia Tech fan, I agree fully with Kevin Rogers. What Vick did is incredibly inexcusable, and first of all should have been a 15 yard unsportsmanlike call, and for that he probably would have been ejected had an official seen it. Truth be told, he didn't stomp all that hard, it was more like a step, but it was most CERTAINLY intentional. Frank Beamer sent Vick to the Cards locker room after the game to apologize to Dumervil, but Dumervil was nowhere to be found. Vick will be disciplined IMO, if not by his coaches, then soon enough by the NCAA. He is a great QB, but for some reason he has this tough guy attitude that needs to go if he is to have any chance of success like his bro playing Sunday football.

The kid is just a problem period. Look at last year, he got suspended and couldn't play. Obviously he didnt learn because stepping on someone is a pretty stupid thing to do. All i know is if you step on me the cleat better go through the head or you in trouble lol.
I cant stand Vick, he underperforms and everyone is on hi snuts. DO something positive to earn your stripes.

I don't think he underperforms. This was his first real year of college football, and he came out with a runner up position for the ACC Player Of The Year award and a Bowl win.
I believe he finished top 5 in the nation with completion percentage and led the ACC in passer efficiency. He threw only a handful of interceptions, he had only one POOR performance all season, and that was against Miami.

Vick was running and got tackled by the Cards All-American Defensive End. When Vick hopped up, it looked like he intentionally (very intentionally) stepped (a pretty hard step) on the back of the tackler's knee. Vick was looking directly at the ground when he stepped on him, hard to say that it wasn't intentional.

Quite honestly, Marcus Vick really isn't that good. If he were not Mike Vick's brother, he wouldn't even be known much. Him and his brother are problems on and off the field. I am not even a big fan of Mike Vick, one of the more overrated players in all sports by far.
Hey Mike....way to get your team to the playoffs this year. Moron.

ESPN has him in the top 3 Heisman Candidates for 2006 already, so does CBSsportsline. I think Vick will mature further this offseason, at least on the field. I can't condone or defend his actions off the field, I thought he had learned his lesson after the criminal charges, but apparently I was mistaken. People get 2nd chances, but not 3rd chances.

Couldn;t agree more.
Mike Vick ya he is fast and exciting to watch at times but seriously he is not the MJ of football. Everyone is like Mike Vick this Mike Vick but what has he done to prove himself, he went to the nfc championship game that was great and followed it up with a poor poor season this year.
Then his brother gets suspended last year and this year he plays ok doesnt really do much and everyone is like he is the next heisman. Come on get off his nuts until he does something worthy of it.

I just saw the play where he obviously steppedon this kid on the ground on purpose and also twisted his spike a little while stepping on the kid. He deserves to get booted from the school and not be able to play football for a couple games next year by the school or whoever has the power. What a loser. I get tired of reading about this kid or seeing him on espn talking about how everyone is out to get him. Grow up, be a man, stop the excuses. This kid couldn't throw a football through a tire even if it came of one those bigfoot trucks..

Wow, we have some Mike Vick haters on here!!! I don't understand how you can say Mike Vick isn't that good when whole defenses have to change their scheme to play him. Many coaches have said if they had him in their lineup that they would change their whole offense to fit him. That's a compliment in itself. Let's take a look at it. Mike Vick's line sucks. He has no time to throw the ball. His receivers up to this point have been average at best (and that's being lenient.) I think they will get better, but in the last few years they have been horrible. For example, Peerless Price was supposed to be the premier receiver last year. He blames Vick for not getting enough balls thrown, yada yada yada. What did he do this year? Get cut from the Cowboys!!! How can a premier receiver get cut? It means he's not a premier receiver...point blank. Anyway, you can hate on Vick all you want, but he is a good quarterback. People hate on him because he's not a conventional quarterback and is not what people are used to. Mike Jordan was hated on when he was first in the league until they realized he was going to revolutionize the game and make them some money. I'm not saying Vick is the MJ of football but he is better than good and he's better than alot of the quarterbacks in the leaugue. Of course you have other great QB's, but you can't say Mike Vick is not that good... That's just a ridiculous statement. I'm going to keep it politically correct on here, but if I said Tom Brady or Peyton Manning is not that good, people would go nuts!!! However, I think those guys are good and I judge them only on their play on the field.
But getting back to the point, I think his brother is good but he has some growing up to do. Nobody is perfect and I don't condone at all what he did to Elvis' knee. That's totally unacceptable, but don't confuse misled actions with not having tremendous talent and being a good QB.

Well as I can see you love Vick and his brother. I really dont wanna get into a debate on whos good and whos not just ask yourself a simple question, what have these two "superstars" done with their time in sports? I agree Vick is good but he gets wayyyyyyyyy to much attention for being a mediacore qb at best.

I couldn't agree more, he's not a top 10 QB in my eyes..Plus the point was Marcus Vick spiking someone on purpose. He should be suspended or let someone kick him while he's down and see if that will teach him a lesson.

Hahahaha. You guys are funny!!! I'm not a Vick lover or hater... I just disagree with the points you guys are making. I do think he (Mike) is a good player. His brother is good, but not great. Practically he seems to just be a little above average to me, but above average took them to 11-2 in a stacked conference. I'm just curious, who do you guys think is the quarterback who sets the standard in the NFL? I'm not trying to bash anyone, I'm just curious.

Well let's see here,
Peyton Manning is the best qb preperation wise and other than not being able to win the big game he is top of the list.
Tom Brady what can I say other than all he does is win. Never lost a playoff game ever.
Carson Palmer, look what he did in just a couple years in the league.
Those are my top 3 for now.

What will he do try to get drafted or comeback and face his suspension yet again!lol
If he tries to get drafted he will not go high at all and I'm not sure he'll get drafted. He may sign after the draft in somebody's camp. It doesn't appear that he has near as much natural talent as his big brother. He probably is more accurate than his big brother but not as strong an arm and he is too short as well. He should come back and face his penalty. And I agree that he should be suspended. There is no room for that kind of action in sports. That's just not classy. These guys seem to never learn. :egads:

anyways, another article
Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick has been permanently dismissed from the Hokie football program due to a cumulative effect of legal infractions and unsportsmanlike play.
Virginia Tech had suspended Vick in 2003. The university provided one last opportunity for Vick to become a citizen of the university and re-admitted him in January 2004, with the proviso that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team.
Head Football Coach Frank Beamer met with Vick and his mother this afternoon and informed the quarterback and his family of the University's decision. His recent actions are unfortunate and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

Said Coach Frank Beamer, "I'm very disappointed that this didn't have a better ending. We wanted what's best for this football team and Marcus. I certainly wish him the best."
