Okay guys, I’m currently thinking about picking up a M3 or 911, but I’m undecided. What is your opinion on these 2 cars… reliability, performance, price. Which one would you pick up?

Since you asked, first of all, I'll pick up a bag of cash. Then the 911.

of the two I would go with the 911

but there's a 15K difference in cars?!

you could get an 04' or 05' M3 with under 10,000 miles and a 6/100,000 warranty for around 48-50K

actually I was just in this situation and went with the M3 because of the warranty and it could fit my golf clubs in the trunk (CPO'd 911's run in the high 50's to 60K range)

plus the 911 has no space to put anything...really not a practical for someone with just one car

the price is not much of an issue nor the space since i;ll be keeping the gs430. I guess my main concern is realiability. I know the 01 M3 had motor issues, but thats been resolved. As for the 911 i'm not sure how reliable it is. I was on a 911 forum and people kept saying that they wouldn't by a used 911 without factory warranty.

My fiance bought a 2003 911 (996) and it has been fairly reliable. From her research the big thing (like the engine on certain E46 M3s) is there is a pretty pervasive issue with the rear main seal on the engines. It's a pretty big fix so under warranty is good advice (her's is and was specifically inspected for that issue prior to purchase).

From what I recall Porsche in general shows up pretty high on quality in surveys like JD Powers, etc BMW is above average.

I think that's good advice for either car

both cars are great IMO (you can't go wrong with either) I wish you the best on your search

yes, i believe from PD powers porsche rating is pretty high

although the 01 engine problems on the m3 was supposed fixed or whatever, personally i would still try to avoid 01. you just want to minimize your chance, right?

I'd go for the 911. I trust Porsche quality more for a German car, & IMO a 911 is also more prestigeous than a M3.

This is easy - Always go for the 911. If there is ever the question "hmm, should I get the 911" the answer is always yes.

I have a 996 C2.. I had no major issue with the car and my 911 doesn't have as much problems as my old E39 M5. if money is not a issue I would say go for the TT or GT2, with no boost the regular 911 is boring.. I'm actually selling my (listed on 6speed forums)to replace with a TT or possibly a GT2..

Hm.. both are great cars but I'd have to say the 911, but if you do plan on getting a used M make sure it has the rod bearing recall done which was infected in the 01-03 models. Good luck on your purchase!

I would go with the 911 for sure. That car is pretty sick, and you can pick up his HREs too
