Last night in NYC, 20,000 people witnessed sports history live at Madison Square Garden. The NY Rangers retired the number worn by the greatest CAPTAIN to ever put on the blue sweater. #11 Mark Messier - eternally known in NY as simply "The Captain".
I was there to see it with my wife and six year old son, who plays hockey and wears his favorite player's #11. I cannot describe the emotions that were flying in the building last night, sadness, joy, they were all part of the evening. For those of you that have ever played hockey you know how important a night this was, for those of you that ever watched hockey and had the chance to see him play you'll be able to say to your kids that you too saw the "Babe Ruth" of hockey play the game.
No one played with more intensity or heart than Mess. He brought us a championship and has been immortalized in The Garden rafters as no one will ever wear # 11 again.
Thanks for the memories Mess!
