I was asked this question from a colleague of mine. Since I graduated couple yrs back with a bachelors in Business. Here is what my take is...
id take a very solid business approach to this..lol
well for one thing... no other luxury competitor offers a truck. (apart from lincoln but they are not a lexus competitor)
So u cud say it wud be awesome if lexus came out with a truck cuz then ppl wud be like ooh ahhh lexus truck and wud buy it. But then the other side is..who is really goign to buy it? will it be worth it for lexus to spend money on builindng the truck? are they goign to expect the sales to come from the truck. Is it worth the investment?
Is there a market for a "lexus truck"? meaning lexus has to identify who their market would be for buying a truck. Right now their market is very clear for each of their cars they have. The truck market is difficult to define. Is a lexus buyer going to need a truck? Why wud they want a truck?
The typical truck buyer wud use it for hauling and moving stuff around with.
Thats why ford and chevy etc have trucks that are cheap that ppl use for work and that stuff. But with lexus? a person that is lookign into a lexus 9 out of 10 times prolly has a job that doesnt require him to move parts or stuff around in. They have a mugh higher job or more prestigious job. so theres no reason to get a truck? for wut? A lexus buyer or perosn looking into a lexus prolly has a very reputable type job. He doesnt need to move stuff around or carry stuff in loads like that. Use it for work, etc. So then who wud buy their truck? not the person that buys ford chevy trucks...they cant afford a lexus vehicle any way (for the most part). So a buyer looking into the truck market - wud never buy a luxury or go for a luxury type truck..becasue that buyer wud 9 out of 10 times wont hold a job that wud require him to use a truck. A trucks main use is to carry stuff and move stuff around in...ppl use it for work and jobs that do that and thats y they need trucks. a lexus buyer wudnt have a job like that...more than 90% of lexus buyers will have a more reputable type job....a more prestigious type job ..so theres no resaon for them to get a truck..they wouldnt. why wud they?
And i think thats why to date lexus never brought out a truck. for this exact reason
People are unwilling to shell out the cash for the Lincoln Mark LT. Why would they want to spend more money on a Lexus version of relatively the same thing?
You pose a very good question. Lexus does have a different version of a truck more like three SUV's the RX, GX and LX. Your question specically asks for Lexus to build a pick-up truck. As you mentioned is there a business case for it? People can just buy a Toyota Tundra or a Tacoma and it will have the same quality and reliability that comes with Lexus just without the Lexus name behind it. I remember awhile back there was a thread discussing if Lexus would build an SUT similar to the Cadillac Escalade and Chevy Avalanche.
Does anyone remember that study that determined the human brain can recognize a word as long as the first and last letter are correctly placed? Well I must be stupid, because I can't read the original post.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't consider SUVs to be a classification of truck. To me they're 4WD vans...heavily refined these days.
Down here in Mexico, when I ask people what to describe my RX300, they all say camioneta or light truck. When I point to a pick up, they say the same thing.
Just rebadge a Tundra... add lexus wheels. I guess you would call it a EX 470... maybe a TX 470. It must keep with the lexus tradition of ALWAYS having two alpha (first the purpose, second the body style) and then three numbers which represent the engine size in liters X100.
the truck market is dominated by the ford f-series and the tacoma and tundra are barely cracking it, so itll be an experiment gone horribly wrong if lexus even tries to attempt it.
