General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz won’t confirm this car exists, but he is not saying it doesn’t. We first wrote about Chevrolet’s ultra-performance Corvette—dubbed Blue Devil, most likely to catch the attention of GM CEO and Duke Blue Devil grad Rick Wagoner—shortly before the sixth-generation Corvette debuted at the Detroit auto show in January (AW, Dec. 22 and 29, 2004). We asked Lutz about the car during a recent exclusive interview with AutoWeek.

“Let’s just say [Corvette chief engineer] Dave Hill is not a guy who likes playing second fiddle to any high-performance car on the road,” said Lutz. “My guess is we’re going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world.”


Lutz said the car may be delayed while the company focuses most of its engineering might on pulling ahead profit-making vehicles like its next-generation large sport/utilities and pickups.

“But there is certainly no lack of desire on anyone’s part to establish the supremacy of the Corvette,” says Lutz.

Spied on the Nurbürgring, Blue Devil appears to be living up to the earlier hype. Eyewitnesses said the car sounds supercharged, confirming reports the engine is likely a blown version of the Z06’s 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds.

Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2006.

 

Oh man I know TXStyle is not happy about this.

 

~$70K for a Z06 is good price, but $100K for a Corvette is too steep . . .

now THAT is one hot mamma. i don't know if i'd spend the money for the blue devil though when you can go 0-60 in under 4 seconds in the Z06.

 

in that rear shot, you can definitely see the lines of the Vettes from the 70's from the B-pillars back to the rear glass. Cool.

I realize its $100,000 for just a "corvette"... but seriously guys, 2900lbs with 600hp??? That thing is going to be AMAZING. I'm having a hard time figuring out what else for that price can give you a power/weight ratio like that.

I think they are looking to dethrown the Ford GT... and they very well may do it with this one.

 

The new Aston Martin AMV8 Vantage is estimated to sell at ~ $120K+ I' ve heard & will be a 4.3 litre V8 with 380 hp. It's a more prestigious name, but will be slower & cost more.

 

DETROIT — Corvette rumors are as rampant these days as tabloid stories about Nick and Jessica. But aficionados' antennae are picking up emanations from deep inside General Motors that Chevrolet is readying an ultra Vette for 2008 that should outgun the new Z06.

According to the Web site, DigitalCorvettes.com, the so-called Corvette SS will be the ultimate Vette, although details at this stage are pretty slim. The rumor mill has a "charged" LS9 engine under the hood as a Corvette exclusive, not to be shared with Cadillac, Pontiac or any other GM brand. Although smaller in displacement than the massive 7.0-liter LS7, the blown LS9 allegedly will churn out more than 600 horsepower — considerably more muscle than the 500-hp Z06.

One insider claims the new Super Vette is not the long-rumored "Blue Devil" car and, in fact, insists that no running prototypes exist yet.

What this means to you: Just like Pizza Hut's quest to find new places for cheese, GM has been striving to tack some more horsepower onto the Vette. Is 1,000 horsepower on the horizon? It's not quite as laughable as it used to be.

You can never have enough horses

 

so instead of fixing there money problems, and building cars that will actualy make money, GM goes out and builds a car that will probably sell 300 units in its life span and cost them more in fixing it than they made from selling it in the long run....... way to go GM thats how you get out of a crisis.
