View Full Version : Do you wash your own car?

I just discovered I will have to wash my own car(not really an option for my lazy azz) or I will have to go to a more expensive hand wash place. I got new rims today and they will get ruined from the track. The place I go to uses the track but they have guys inside who hand wash down the line. It was cheap too, only about 7 bucks for plain wash and 11 bucks on Tues and Wed for wash, wax, underbody clean, wheel clean, and dressing.
I am totally bummed about this.

Do you wash your own car or do you go to a hand wash place or do you go to a regular car wash place?

*If you go to a hand wash place in the Los Angeles area, where do you go? I need to find a good place.*

Not from Los Angeles but I wash my baby on a daily basis, usually takes me 4 hours each time too. I use to go through the car wash but after a couple of mods I can't do that any more. Its not so bad anyway, I actually like it. Just remember doesn't matter what car you have as long as its clean it'll be amazing

I wash her myself (even if the only time I can is 8 at night when I get home from work and it's frosty out... ya, last night was fun ;) ) mainly cuz I'm one of these people who's just too anal to let someone else half ar$e it.

... only, I'm sooo anal... that even washing it at home drives me crazy because I don't have a water purifier for my garden hose. :D

Thanks man, announce to the world why don't you about my crappy driving skills. I drove home so frickin' slow today it was agonizing. I had my teeth clenched, wanted to strech my right leg so badly but was scared of potholes.

My dealer has a automated car wash and I don't feel like being cheap and making them manually hand wash just for a free wash. Although I will be getting that when I go in for service.

When I was a kid I used to wash my BMW before street racing adventures :p

Now, my RX gets hand washed along with a wash of the engine bay and the underside before heading up to the track.

Gee thanks a lot for announcing it to the public Henry. Don't worry, payback cometh. :D
Yes, I totally blanked about the car washing thing. And I do mean blanked as I had so much experience from working at dealerships with automated car washes. Doh.

I posted wheel pics in IS forum.

Actually I want to vote for the top two choices. Sometimes I wash it myself, sometimes I take it to a regular car wash.

You guys can pretty much guess how MY car gets cleaned...I don't have to tell you.

The secret to a good hand wash, whether you use plain water or a wash-solution ( do NOT use dishwashing detergent :nono: ) is to first wet the whole car with the hose, get inside the wheel-wells and the inside ledges, and (crucially important ) get ALL the sand off after a snow....this may take time and a lot of water. The sand can hide in a million places. Then, with a clean sponge or rag, do one section at a time...start with the roof. KEEP the whole car wet until it is time to dry it...do NOT allow any one section to dry after washing. You will have to keep lightly spraying the whole car to keep it wet until you are done washing. Then when the whole car is clean and still wet, then dry it with a couple of SOFT clean towels. Genearch seems to have no trouble with waterspots and air-drying, but I have found by experience that the above procedure works best for getting the car clean, dry, and avoiding waterspots.
After the car is dry on the outside, you can usually wipe the inside windows clean with just a slightly damp towel...usually you don't need ammonia or vinegar unless they are REALLY dirty.

Some people say you shouldn't use a sponge ( it scratches ). I disagree...I've used one for years and have had no trouble. They do wear though, and fall apart fairly quickly...you have to keep buying new ones.

For emergencies on the road in-between washes....say if a bird or slop from the road gets you, and you want to get it off quickly before the paint suffers, I keep a large, well-sealed bottle of water in the trunk and a sponge that I can take out anywhere and anytime the temperature is above freezing and wet the sponge and the dirty area and do an emergency spot-clean. I also keep my recommended SCRATCH-OUT and soft towels and rags with me at all times.

The pride and joy.....I wash my own, except for having to do a shampoo on the inside one time . Complete vacuum, wash, shampoo, tire dressing $35.......and no scratches on the rims
I watch them like a fixated psycho :D

mmarshall-I agree with you on what you mentioned above: regarding the sponge is to make sure you wash with it after dropping it on the ground :eek2: . And to not let it dry after soaping....continually wetting it.

But with my bad luck, seems like 8/10 every time I wash, the next day it rains

And here's something that DMV is planning on doing.........j/k liz :D

I'm the only one who washes my cars. When I go to the dealer I make sure they write it on the service ticket "NO WASH" and I leave a sign in my car that says the same thing in English AND Spanish.

Well what do you know? It's raining today. Good thing I didn't wash the car.:D

Yes, I'm down here in the oc, not LA though.

Liz, did you put the soap and the rain rinse it off? :woohoo:

Oh boy was I happy it rained today. My car was getting pretty skanky it was so dirty. I just parked outside and not in the garage.

I still haven't found a good wash joint in LA tho.

I'm a compulsive detailer, so I won't let anyone touch my cars, and once it gets warm out, it's not uncommon for me to wash my car several times a week. Brush car washes are the worst thing to happen to the auto detailing industry  lol

Since we've had this car, it's been washed by another maybe 4 times. When in for service, I always tell them "no wash".

Funny you mention rain...when it rains, I leave the car out to rinse. Then I get the washing goodies and soap it up. Let the rain rinse it off, pull it in and dry it. :) Best part is it seldom leaves water marks like hose water does. Neighbors think I'm nuts to wash the car in the rain (usually the last day of the downpour) but when it stops, the car is clean when the weather clears.

The last time, a neighbor asked how my car is clean the day following the rain. :D

I'm very anal about my cars. Never ever let anyone touch my cars. I always wash it myself, and dry it with those mircofiber cloths or something, the kind that doesn't leave any of that stuff behind. The little threads that seem to stick to the body.

Then I always wax it.

But then, there's a time when we see people hand washing cars at a cheap price. I can't resist a cheap car wash. :D

mmarshall,

I find it is okay to wash your car with dish detergent (liquid type) in order to strip down the paint of wax and other grime. However, after that using detergent, you should wax your car.

fyi, I still have not washed my car since before I started this thread in mid Feb, now it's April. That's a month and a half! I can't find a hand wash place in LA. My car is so gross right now.
