Post Audi new V-6 to be 292hp?

I just read with the new A4, the V-6 will be rated at 292hp, so expect it to be in that neighborhood. That is on par with the Benz.

THis is amazing, as these new V-6s make as much power as V-8s 10 years ago.

That really is amazing to think about. Up through now, I've always thought of getting a GS300 (even the 3GS) or in this case an A6 3.2 as being a severe compromise on price and acceleration/power. But now, with all the new V6's putting out 290hp+, you can finally get a pretty quick mid-size luxury car in the 40k range. Sure it'll be nice to have the 350hp+ V8's, but dollar for dollar a GS350 or the E350 (with the new 292 v6) will be a better value i'd think.

Is this the 3.2? Or is this an entirely new engine?

Edit: NA or Turbo? VWAG likes to use FI on their engines, not that there's anything wrong with that

it's actually a 3.6l FSI motor...they're releasing it for entire line. notably for the t-reg but the rest of the audi line should benefit from this.

Competition and technology are great things Reminds me of a return to the 60's when everyone was bumping up the HP. Only difference now is that you can get cars that are much better suited to handle all that power and get better gas milage.

Isn't this already being used in the Passat V6? I know it's a 3.6 good for ~280 hp

Even some V12s were in this range not too long ago:

Jaguar XJ12
A V12 engine for 1994, developing 301 horsepower from 6.0L

I'm not sure if it's the same motor as the Passat is a transverse motor. The previous gen Passat had a different v6 from the previous gen A4. So i dont know.

Where did you got infomation! Are you sure Audi built brand new V6 engines! It still less powerful Lexus IS350. If an Audi introduce new V6 engine in the world, and an BMW 3 and 5 least horsepower cars!

Not surprising.

The new Q7 4.2L FSI V8 makes 350 hp. That's actually more hp per liter than the projected hp in the LS460.

I wonder how much torque the engine will make, and at what RPM power will come in.

Audi's FSI technology has not seen any major improvements over the past few years. Toyota has used gasoline Direct Injection for about just as long as VW, and Toyota is already introducing dual fuel injection into its new engines.

Regarding the Q7's 4.2L FSI, why worry about HP/L? HP/L is not that meaningful for production cars, as it gives no indication of fuel economy, overall power, or where the power is made.

The Q7's engine makes 350HP at a rather high 6800RPM. It also makes 325 lb-ft torque at more reasonable 3500RPM. In contrast, that's a bit higher torque than the Lexus 4.3L V8, but the Lexus engine makes it's peak torque at a lower RPM. That's not even counting the fact it's an old engine design, that does not use direct injection.

The Lexus 4.6L V8 will have 380HP made at less than 6800 RPM, and 370 lb-ft of torque likely at a low RPM. If Lexus really wanted to, they probably could have had the 4.6L V8 making 400HP at around 6800 RPM.

No one is "worried" about hp/liter figures. They're just facts.

hp/liter is one indication of the technology advancement of an engine. Not the only indicator, but an indicator nonetheless. When the LS460 came out with the 380 hp figure, everyone liked to tout how much power it makes given that it is smaller than either the BMW 4.8L or the MB 5.4L.

I'm sure that all of these manufacturers could make a 500 hp engine out of 4 liters if they really wanted to. Not just Toyota.
