Default Acura to debut new MDX at NYIAS(updated pg.10)

Acura to Debut New MDX Concept at New York International Auto Show

TORRANCE, Calif., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrating its 20th
anniversary as a brand, Acura today announced plans to debut a concept version
of the all-new MDX luxury sport-utility vehicle, April 12, at the New York
International Auto Show and released an artist's rendering of the new vehicle.
Scheduled to debut later this year, the 2007 Acura MDX will be the second
generation of Acura's luxury SUV to be designed, developed and manufactured
exclusively in North America.
"The 2007 MDX will speak clearly to the advanced image of Acura and
promises to put MDX solidly at the front of the pack with a striking new
image, new technology and performance unmatched in the segment," said ****
Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The
designers and engineers working on this new MDX have a tremendous passion for
this product that will be evident in all aspects of its design and
performance."
The company made the announcement on the 20th anniversary of its creation
as the first Japanese luxury nameplate. "The pioneering spirit that gave
birth to Acura two decades ago is driving our continued advancement and
innovative approach to luxury," said Colliver. "Acura is twenty years young
today -- stronger, faster, more nimble and more on the cutting edge of
automotive design and technology than at any time in its 20-year history."
The company also celebrated the groundbreaking for a new Acura-exclusive
design facility -- the Acura Design Center -- scheduled to open in the summer
of 2007. This new facility, located at the company's Torrance, California,
headquarters will play a critical role in the research and design of future
Acura products and will serve to ensure that Acura continues to produce
distinctive designs that communicate the advanced style, performance and
character of Acura.
Launched on March 27, 1986, Acura was the world's first Japanese luxury
nameplate and the first to challenge established European and American luxury
marques with its world-class engineering, product quality, value and advanced
powertrain technology. Its 20-year history of innovation includes the first
Japanese exotic sports car, the highly-acclaimed Acura NSX, and numerous
technology firsts including the first automotive applications of in-dash
navigation, Bluetooth(R) phone integration and DVD-Audio surround sound.
Acura was also the first Japanese luxury automaker to develop and manufacturer
its vehicles in North America, beginning with the 1997 Acura 2.2CL coupe.
Today, nearly two-thirds of all Acura vehicles sold in America are designed,
developed and manufactured in North America.
In 2005, the Acura Division recorded its third consecutive year of record
sales, topping the two-hundred thousand mark for the first time in the
Division's history. It's class leading products include the Acura TL sedan,
America's best-selling luxury sedan in 2004; the award-winning Acura MDX
sport-utility vehicle; and the highly popular TSX sports sedan, three-time
recipient of Car and Driver magazine's 10Best honors. Its top-of-the-line RL
performance luxury sedan boasts numerous technology innovations including
AcuraLink Satellite Communication System with Real Time Traffic, Super
Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and the first North American application of
advanced Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) technology.
In 2006, Acura will introduce two all-new models -- the 2007 Acura MDX and
the completely new RDX premium entry SUV. Equipped with an innovative new
2.3-liter turbocharged engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the RDX
combines sport-utility function with sports sedan handling and performance.
The RDX will launch this summer as a 2007 model.

RDX is going to be killer, I have a feeling the 2.3 liter variable geometry turbo 240 hp 260 torque will make its way into other cars like the RSX and TSX

Curious to see what the new MDX is going to look like, maybe this means hte Pilot will be redesigned soon

Cool Pic

I am sure that it will look nothing like this pic but just thought that I would share.

As for the RDX: last I heard they were pricing it in the mid-30s which is awfully close to the current MDX's price (perhaps the MDX price will go up w/ the new model?) If true, w/ a price that high I forsee sales similar to that of the Ridgeline: not bombing exactly but not quite anything to get excited over either.

Well I heard that the RDX was a little smaller than the MDX.. My father has the MDX and its very sporty yet luxury at the same time.. It would be nice to see a turbo MDX maybe rated at 280-300HP to compete with the RX and others.. Slightly larger dual exhaust tips would set the rear end very nicely. Anyone have any other pics besides the one up above...?

so who said i4 turbos in a SUV are bound to fail? it already obliterates the X3 in drivetrain, power, reliability and is going to be a ton cheaper

and then the RAV4 V6 behind it smoked them both...

sorry but as much of a Honduh fan I am, I am VERY disapointed with Honda finally giving into FI. It was the mantra of excellence in efficiency of engineering that produced VTEC. 15 years later, they have succumbed to the masses and brought on a FI I4...whoopty doo!
Honda has really fallen behind the technology curve and needs to get their mojo back...

Honda already had production gasoline turbo cars in the past before. They just never made it to the US. I'm all for Honda introducing more production turbo cars into their line up. I'm a fan of natural aspiration, but I also like FI as well. Now, if Honda/Acura went to FI only, I'd be upset, but as long as they offer a wide range of choices I'm all for it.

Anyway, the MDC should still retain an NA engine and the turbo I4 is perfect for the smaller RDX. I'll reserve judement on the RDX over all style and fit and finish when I see one in person, but I wasn't too impressed over all with the Rav4 I checked out this past weekend. I love the RAV 6 V6 engine, but that is about all.

What is wrong with FI? I don't understand how some people can get so bent out of shape that Honda made and is offering the choice of one FI powerplant. FI is not that common either, the masses are generally using NA 4 and 6 cylinders. Why is a NA v-6 so technological and a FI 4 cylinder is not. A NA v-6 is succumbing to the masses not a FI engine. The first thing many enthusiasts did when they had the money was put a turbo on their Honda civics, preludes, integras, S2000, NSX, because they wanted the large power gains of FI. Honda is loosing some enthusiasts to the turbo awd wrxs and evos because they are what many enthusiasts have always wanted. What is wrong with Honda/Acura giving enthusiasts what many wanted which was FI engines as well as powerful high reving NA engines. I would rather have more variety in engine choices then just NA 4 or 6 cylinders. So putting a v-6 in the RDX like what is in most of their lineup as well as others would be some sort of superior technological achievement then this new turbo engine that can also go in the TSX and a sports coupe which is what many people are asking for? Would some of these people rather the older Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, just be NA 6 cylinders? Do most prefer the NA 350Z over the last twin turbo 300zx, I prefer the old Z car to the new one. Is a Porsche 911 turbo, GT2, 959, Ferrari F40, GTO, Buggati Veyron, EB110, Skylines, Supras, succumbing to the masses and not leaders in technology, performance, or what people really want or wanted in high end sports cars.

Turbo engines can offer more power, torque, better fuel economy, cleaner emissions then larger high reving engines putting out the same power. Honda can still make highly efficient high performance NA engines as well as having the choice of a few FI engines. I am glad Honda/Acura is offering FI engines as well as NA engines in their lineup.

Wink "Enthusiasts"

It's the giving in to the 'enthusiasts' that make a brand fail. Enthusiasts are out there no doubt about it, but they're not the bread-and-butter customers that a world class automaker like Honda, needs to entertain. Honda needs to make better vehicles with more real luxury items (if you're going to put wood trim, use real wood, not faux wood) in their vehicles. Acura may have been the first to market, but Lexus is currently first in market, and if Acura doesn't start making strides to improve their products and play with the big boys, in another twenty years they may be first to be out of market.

Lightbulb Torque

For whatever reason, people have long badgered Honda/Acura for more torque; this gets 240hp & 260 ft-lbs of torque. If they want to compete (not that they are doing bad) they are going to have to follow some trends every now & again - like a V8 otherwise they may have problems like the current RL.

I agree with you, I too used to be a fan of Honda's high output V-tec engines, and feel that they been slacking for way too long, and haven't introduced any significant new tech since late 90ies. It's not that I have anything against FI, no, but Honda has never been associated with FI, it was always pushing high revving NA engines that made more hp/l than most other manufacturers, but now they are being surpassed left and right.
