TOKYO, April 7 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) plans to cut manufacturing costs by 15 percent over the next three years to help improve profitability and price competitiveness, the Asahi daily reported on Friday.
Toyota has been working on a cost-saving strategy for about a year, looking for new ways to develop and make car parts -- for example by lumping certain components together into one module instead of shaving costs for each component as in the past.
The paper quoted an official as saying Toyota aimed to cut costs by more than 200 billion yen ($1.7 billion) every year.
A spokesman said that while the company was striving to cut costs, no specific targets have been set.
He said Toyota would announce a cost cut target for the current year when in releases annual results. Toyota had forecast 140 billion yen in cuts for the year ended March 31. ($1=117.79 yen)
