Just saw that 5 page thread about what grade gas to put in ur 2nd IS, and it made me think of a question.................. maybe someone with some expertise in this area can shed some light on this issue?

I'm wondering if you get the same 91 octane gas as in the gas stations if you just mixed half 93 and half 89. the math works out to be 91, but is it really a 91 octane gasoline??

Mathematically speaking, yes, you get 91 octane fuel.

Where do you get 93 octane gas on a regular basis? Most gas stations serve 87, 89, and 91.

Here in central NJ, all I see is 87, 89 and 93. I don't see 91 anywhere.

Is this because of California EPA Laws?

I live in California and some gas stations actually have 94 octane gas. Its freaking expensive, but it is available.

In NJ, most (if not all) Sunoco station have Ultra 94. It's usually about 5 to 10 cents more than their price for 93 octane premium, but probably less than most stations in California charge for regular.

Yes, this is correct. Where in MO can you find 93?

The answer to your question is, yes. It is fairly common to blend racing fuels to get the octane rating you need without paying for anything extra.

The answer is yes, you will be 91 when mixing two together. Remember not to get anything higher the required octane rating stated by the manual since it does not get you anything better. You may FEEL better and want to think it is better because you pay more, but it is really not.

Yep. One time I placed 87 in my turbo car below by accident (stupid layout at the pump, don't ask ). Added octane booster, burned a portion of the fuel, and then filled up with 93.
