Power itself is not as significant to acceleration as power-to-weight ratio, transmission / final-drive gearing, and the engine's torque curve. That's one reason why the relatively small ( for its day ) Dodge and Plymouth 340 c.i. V8 ( a bored-out 318 ) handily outran several larger-engine competitors...relatively light vehicle weight in the Duster, Dart / Demon, and Barracuda / Challenger and the super-efficient Chrysler Torqueflite automatic transmission with its lightning-quick shifts that outran some manuals.
