Well, Mike, I know you and I have disagreed somewhat on this car before, but for 40K I would take an end-of-model year or slightly used 2005-2006 Acura RL...enough to get the price down from 50K to 40K + / - .
Second choice, right behind that would, without question, be the 2006 Lexus GS300AWD discounted somewhat from its 47-49K list prices.
Both cars strongly impressed me during my reviews of them...especially the RL.

Hmmm....Can you get an M5 for 40 grand these days(the older one)?? Ohhh, how about a mid 90's Lotus Esprit!! haha
New?? IS350.
IS350's brand-new run a bit north of 40K. The one Road and Track tested this month was 45K....and Lexus dealers generally do not bargain strongly on the IS despite its historically slow sales, though you usually do not have to pay full list.

I could get one for 40 grand. Just dont load it up with options. It does start below 40K.

Yes...probably.....but you might have to either hunt for one or put in an order and wait. Stripped IS's are available ( I bought one myself ) but they are not a dime a dozen.

There are plenty. You can easily get IS350 under 40K anytime right now. I got mine under 40K during the first month it came out. It's semi-loaded, not stripped. I also had to pay for hefty california tax, and it came out under 40K OTD.
its ABOUT 40grand (used)
2005 Lotus Elise (base model)
MSRP for an 06 is $42,990+$925 delievery, but since u want <$40k, used is the way to go.
Yes...with a name like Pure Drifter, that is pretty much the car I expected you to pick.
"Pure" describes this car in almost every sense...it is probably the purest " driver's car " in the American market. Though I personally have not driven one, ( yet ) from what I have read and know about it, it makes even a BMW M-car feel like a loaded dump truck.

I respect your opinon like the law, but I'd rather get hit by an RL, then as I get up, get hit by another RL, get dragged up a 40% incline by this RL, and ran over by all 12 RLs Acura has sold the past year , where I burst into flames from spontaneous combustion, on the way to my demise, where the police can't tell me apart from a burnt chicken wing.
