no wonder I couldn't go up Victoria...I was driving the Toyota shuttle picking up a customer, and I wanted to go back to the 101...that totally screwed my day. Besides, the traffic in the area really sucked

With a small aircraft, depending on aircraft and weather conditions, there are a number of different things that can cause power failure on take-off ( I am a licensed pilot myself ) but one of the most common things is simply an inadequate check ( or NO check ) for water in the airplane's fuel tank during the preflight. Water in a plane's fuel tank, being heavier than gasoline, tends to settle and collect in the bottom of the tanks....which are usually in the wings. A special drain **** in the bottom of the tanks allows the pilot ( or pre-flighter ) to take a couple of fuel samples in a small, transparent plastic container and check for the correct color ( different fuel grades are dyed different colors ) and for clear, water bubbles. You keep taking samples until there are no more bubbles. If you DON'T get all the water out, you may not notice it at first during starting, taxi, and runup, but the vibrations and flapping of the wing during takeoff will shake the water bubbles up and then the gravity-feed or fuel pump will pick them up and feed them through the carburator or fuel injectors into the engine....and then of course the engine stalls....sometimes only a couple of hundred feet off the ground, and you have to set the plane down very quickly on the best piece of ground you can get to....and at low altitude and low speed you often don't have many options to choose from.
