Default Overall Quality of used STi and EVO VIII

I was trying to look up some reliability ratings for the mitsubishi evo VIII and the subaru STi but it sems that i cannot find and information.
I was just wondering which would be the better choice if I were to buy used, in terms of reliability.
Any body have any insight into Subaru and Mitsubishi?
thanks
specificly i was looking at 2004 Subaru STi and 2003 mitsubishi EVO

You have to remember who is going to be selling those cars... Usually people between the ages of 17-25. They most likely modded the crap out of the car and ragged them HARD. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to buy used unless it came as a CPO.

I've had many customers with both evos and stis (i'm a subaru driver myself). It will take a little work to find a used one of either car in "acceptable" condition. They're not like Lexus', where you can find an old grandma who had one for 10 years with 5,000 miles still on it.

People say Subarus have weak trannys. In my experience, every WRX/STi customer I've had with transmission problems also had a driver who DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE VERY WELL. People also say Evos have weak transfer cases. I've had to warranty about 3 Evo transfer cases/clutches, but these were also somewhat related to DRIVER ERROR.

Both are good cars, but they weren't manufactured to last a long time like a Toyota.
What I CAN say is that SUBARUS ARE LOTS OF FUN OFFROADING, AND IN THE MUD.

try getting a GC8 (previous generation Impreza) and swap with a newly-wrecked STi engine/drivetrain/suspension. The swap will cost around 10~12k, but it'll be well worth it.

BTW the 2002+ front dash (the whole thing from the top of the gauges down to where it meets the shifters) fits the older GC Imprezas. No kidding.

You got that right.

You really are better off with the Subaru. This is my 3rd. Traded in the '96 Legacy GT for the '99. Had to have the manual transmission. My brother had the GC8 Impreza RS and that was fun. The Lancer is 1/10 of a second faster but less reliable. In addition to that the Impreza is ridiculously safe. Subaru's reinforced B pillars create a safety cage that make Volvo's look like coke cans.
