TOKYO — OK, this story doesn't have any direct link with cars.

But Toyota — which of course is a company that makes forklifts, houses and plenty else besides cars — has teamed up with Menicon, Japan's largest manufacturer of contact lenses, to offer new composting methods for farmers. An unlikely pairing to work on an unlikely product, but it just might work.

In a press release, the world's number-two carmaker said its new resQ45 process substantially reduces nitrous oxide, methane and other greenhouse gases, as well as offensive odors produced by livestock waste. Apparently it's all part of Toyota's efforts to clean up the environment.

Japan's farmers reportedly are faced with the challenge of disposing 89 million tons of livestock manure annually! Luckily for them, Toyota's tidying technology is available in their country exclusively — for now. It would be no surprise if the ambitious automaker rolled out the process worldwide eventually.

What this means to you? Detroiters used to say Toyota could make money if it started selling…um…waste. It's not a punch line anymore.
