TSHWANE, South Africa — Subarus may not seem like the world's most exciting cars, but around here they're a popular and speedy choice for the criminal element.
Now, in the tradition of European police — who drive a variety of police cars from Smart minicars to Mitsubishi Lancer Evos — the police in the town of Tshwane are adopting Subaru Imprezas as police cars.
"So many of the crooks were using Subarus as getaway cars," explained Subaru South Africa in a release announcing the sale of seven Subaru Impreza 2.0 Sportwagons for highway patrol purposes.
All-wheel drive, good cornering ability and what Subaru extols as "excellent active and passive safety features" all contributed to the choice. Besides, according to the company, Subaru Imprezas are already being used as police cars in Australia, Italy, France, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom — and New York.
What this means to you: Italian police made headlines not so long ago with a Lamborghini Gallardo police cruiser — so this is not so far-fetched. American cops in your Crown Vics, eat your hearts out!
