Faulty liftgates have prompted a recall of 2004-'05 Toyota Sienna minivans.
Date posted: 08-09-2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into reports of excessive wear of a front chassis component that could lead to suspension failures in 2003 and 2004 Toyota Tundra pickups. It has also opened a separate investigation into 2004 and 2005 Toyota Sienna minivans after getting reports of four injuries that happened when the liftgates shut unexpectedly.
The new recall probes add to continuing quality concerns at the Japanese auto giant.
Last month, the Japanese government rebuked the company because of the growing number of recalls. They are up sharply in the past year and a half, undermining Toyota's once-sterling reputation as the industry leader in quality.
In late July, Fitch Ratings said the increasing number of recalls could mar the company's brand image.
What this means to you: The nagging question remains: Has Toyota's phenomenal growth come at the expense of vehicle quality?
