A guy in my neighborhood just bought his wife a 650i convertible YESTERDAY. Was driving out of our development and someone going too fast in the opposite direction this evening around a curve on the wrong side of the road caused the 650i owner to go off the road and then lost control and hit a tree and then bounced back across the road to end up like this.

Remember this car is 1 day old.

The BMW assistance called him immediately because the air bags had gone off, and said they'd send a tow truck. 3 hours later no tow truck and I had to leave him there in the pitch dark still waiting for the truck to show up.

Ouch. Those were some nice rims though. Unlike everyone else, I always like the convertible more.

chrome wheels have no place on a bmw, but i do like that wheel style. Sad day for that owner, im sure they will get a brand new one, looks totaled.

Multiple choice:

A) It'll buff right out.
B) Safety system works (note the airbag and pop-up hoops deployed).
C) Is Mr. "just bought his wife a 650i convertible YESTERDAY" looking to adopt a 30 year old son?
or
D) Glad everybody is ok.

I'll go with A. Scrub a little dent-b-gone on there and that little scratch'll fade from memory.

So much for BMW Assist. Maybe the tow truck met the same fate further down the road.

BTW Bit, I can see your Explorer ...

How fast can that golf cart go??? :D

Seems like both drivers are guilty are driving a little too fast.

Nevertheless, if that 6 was driving if even less than 25mph (in a residential area), damage shouldn't have been that bad. Airbags don't deploy at low speed collision, right? ;)

Haha - that's a Polaris off road vehicle. It's actually pretty fast.

Seems like both drivers are guilty are driving a little too fast.

The 'other' driver never stopped and we don't know who it was. The BMW driver says the other driver was on the wrong side of the road cutting the corner and that caused the BMW driver to first swerve toward the side he ended up on but the other driver swerved the same way so the BMW driver then corrected the other way (he says he overcorrected) and his left side 2 wheels ended up in the dirt and he says he lost traction and his front left side hit the tree, his car then bouncing off the tree to the right and across the road and he stopped where the picture shows.

Nevertheless, if that 6 was driving if even less than 25mph (in a residential area), damage shouldn't have been that bad. Airbags don't deploy at low speed collision, right? ;)

He (BMW driver) kept telling me over and over how slow he was going, but I wasn't quite buying it. I'm not a cop or having any real involvement in this except I'm the Pres. of the home owner's association and went out to see what happened to see if there's something we could/should have done. That's also why I took the pics.

Anyway, do any Bimmerphiles here know if airbags won't deploy below 25mph or some other speed? That would be VERY useful information. Not only did the wheel airbag go off, but so did the driver's side one too.

His doberman was in the back seat (yeah, in a new $90K car  ) and must have had quite a shock too.

Seems like the only vehicle that went "off road" was the 6. :D sorry , couldn't resist.

Some googling revealed some sources that airbags deploy around 12 mph into a fixed wall. http://www.aorc.org/faq.asp.
I don't buy it b/c I know/heard of friends/acquaintances where they were involved in accidents going around even 20-25 mph and none of them had their airbags deployed.

Still losing traction and bouncing off other wall..........at low speed.......just hard to believe. An traffic accident investigator would be perfect for re-creating this  :D

Is that a river or some kind of waterfall in the backround?

Dumb drivers of all makes. My local dealer has a new M6 with 700 miles on it... the lady who took delivery (husband gave it to her) admitted it was too powerful and traded it in within a week. Thankfully, she knew her limitations..

Those look to be the Style 128 wheels, they are 21". I originally ordered them for my car in the standard finish, BMW sent a letter to all dealers that they are not to install that wheel on the E63/E64. The geometry is all wrong.

but seems like she was just trying to get away from head on collision? seems like the driver in the other car was wrong?

That suck alot. My frineds mom orderd one and it showed up 3 days before Katrina hit and still at the dealership and ended up having 3 feet of water in it. That car looks like hers too, black on black on black, sexy as hell I think. Its sad the only BMW 650's I've seen in that color has been messed up,lol.

That's basically a 'lake' someone has in their front yard - they've been doing all kinds of excavation, lining it and added a nice stone waterfall. The house is pretty nice too.

The guy with the 650i (that's not his place at the lake there, but he only lives 2 houses up) has all kinds of cars and is always bragging about how much he makes etc. What he really makes I don't know or care but if it were all true I'm not sure why he'd be living in my neighborhood.

But there's definitely some nice pretty properties here and my wife and I are definitely "poor" compared to many in here! :p

A Doberman in the back seat? No wonder the other guy didn't stop.

As to the air bag question, most cars today have the sensors ( gold-plated to avoid corrosion ) set to fire the bags at the g-force equivalent to a forward 14 MPH impact into a solid structure. Many bags, of course, are set to fire in stages depending on the car's speed and the amount of weight detected in the seat. ( somebody my size, of course, would probably need them fired full-force )

Most of you guys know I'm no fan of Chris Bangle machines, but I do feel sorry for this couple anyway......a $90,000 car wrecked in less than 24 hours is depressing, to say the least.
