Audi Planning New Mini-Fighter - A1 ?

16 August 2006
• Sporty A1 coupe expected 2010
• Cheaper replacement for A2
• Convertible on the cards too
Audi could be preparing a new generation of small cars to replace the A2 and take on BMW's Mini.
Although the A2 was expensive to produce, and not a great success for Audi, the company is thought to be impressed by the Mini and keen to have a second go at building a family of models to sit beneath the A2.
These computer-generated images show how the A1 family of coupe and roadster could look. Potentially based on the next Polo supermini platform, the A1 would certainly be a sportier car than the upright, MPV-profiled A2.
It would also have to scrap the costly aluminium construction of the A2 so starting prices could sit comfortably below the A2 and tempt motorists away from the Mini.
With the A1 only expected to go on sale in 2010, possibly following on from a debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, there's nothing official from Audi on the car just yet.
The company has already confirmed a line of new models that will take into new arenas, however, including the Mercedes CLK-rivalling A5 coupe arriving next year, and the Q5, a smaller brother for the Q7 off-roader that will take on the BMW X3.

The A2 never made it to Mexico (where we had the A3 for years before it came to the U.S.), which surprised me as I thought it would go head to head against the A160/A190 from Mercedes. Then people told me partly what was just mentioned above. The A1 should be a good seller, but I wonder if it might steal away some A3 and TT buyers in the process. Would love to see how they are going to market and price this.

Audi hasnt been selling that great lately because of new 3 series and the IS
i really dont like the rear of that new A1 coupe
looks cheap
their cars are more reliable.
I pulled up next to a brand new A6 this morning and boy was that a beautiful
car. The details are just stunning. I've always liked Audi, but the company
falls into a weird category where you wouldn't buy one or recommend one to
a friend. But you would like to own and drive one.

If they are going to build it, they should make it a Mercedes Benz A-class or B-class fighter instead, and make the A3/S3 the BMW 1-series fighter. Mini is an icon, so do the Golf and the GTI. This A1 has no fan-base at all.
