Default Ford Offers Zero-Percent Financing as Privatization Reports Swirl

Date posted: 08-24-2006

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford will offer zero-percent financing for up to 72 months on its 2006 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. The program, called the Labor Day Sales Event, starts immediately and is set to run through September 5.

The automaker saw its sales drop 34 percent in July compared with the same month in 2005, and late last week Ford said it would reduce North American production by 21 percent. General Motors and Chrysler already had limited zero-percent finance programs in place this summer.

A Ford spokeswoman called the program an "aggressive 2006 selldown." Ford has said it will extend the zero-percent offer even to approved Ford Credit customers with "subprime" credit.

Nearly all 2006 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, with the notable exception of the Ford GT, are included in the program.

In other Ford news, after a day of swirling media reports about rumors of Ford being interested in a merger with Nissan and Renault, shares of the automaker spiked in early trading on rumors and reports that the Ford family may be interested in taking the company private.

What this means to you: Ford is pulling out all the stops to move some iron before the fourth quarter begins. There's not much else you can say for certain about this company at the moment.

If it'll help, let them do it. They need something, anything, to catch the public's attention to their cars/trucks. There is so much competition that Ford needs the extra light to get focus away from other automakers.

instead of all these gimicks why don't they just build a car people want.

Since getting my license in the early 90's I can't say Ford has every made a single car I would buy.

I also think these gimicks are bogus, everytime they come out for a car I would seriously buy, Vette, Solstice, Sky, etc, they are excluded, would be a great incentive for on the fence buyers like myself who only buy cars made in japan.
