Default Paris Preview: Porsche Readies Four Newcomers

Among the new models Porsche will show at the Paris Motor Show next month will be this 415-hp 911GT3 RS.

Date posted: 08-26-2006

STUTTGART, Germany — Porsche will unveil four new models at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, including the 911 Targa 4S and the 911GT3 RS. In addition, the Cayman and the Boxster S will get new engines for the show.

The new wide-body 911 Targa 4 models get permanent all-wheel drive and panoramic glass roofs with foldaway rear windows. The Targa 4S, which will reach European customers in November, makes 355 horsepower.

The GT3 RS, which goes on sale in Europe in October, gets a 3.6-liter flat-six engine that makes 415 hp.

The Boxster and Boxster S are being upgraded this fall as well. The base car's 2.7-liter engine now makes 245 hp and 201 pound-feet of torque. The Boxster S gets a larger 3.4-liter six that delivers 295 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque.

Paris will also be the first official public outing for the base Cayman, which joins the Cayman S. The standard model shares its 245-hp 2.7-liter engine with the base Boxster — a new addition to the Cayman nameplate.

What this means to you: Porsche continues to flesh out its model range with derivatives, prior to the launch of the all-new Panamera in late 2008.

So they are introducing a less-powerful albeit less expensive Cayman? Was this always planned or do you think sales of the model are low?

nowadays Porsche always introduces S and base models

i think a base cayman makes more sense than Cayman S
cause i would rather save up a little more for 911 than get a Cayman S even though cayman is mid engine

where as many porsche enthusiasts prefer hardtop over convertables so cayman will encourage more buyers that wants a "hardtop boxster"

even though boxster does has the removeable hardtop option, its still rare and costly and still isnt that nice

ive always liked how cayman looks, one day ill definately get a porsche

but probably not a paramera
anything that has to do with VW, ill stay away from...

So you mean the hardtop shell that all roadsters offer as optional accessories?

yup
porsche dealers can order it for u or you can buy it 2nd hand
it is rather expensive though and will weigh your vehicle down a bit
but it does look very nice doesnt it?
almost like a 911 if u dont look at the rear

well with the new 245hp, even the base boxster wont slow down much with the hardtop on

btw i do believe cayman receives the highest ranking in Customer Satisfaction in its category (compact sports coupe or something)
i wouldnt mind buying one

Yeah, okay. I wasn't sure why you were saying that's rare, or even why it would matter that it's rare since you can buy it yourself.

Personally, I would get it if I drove a roadster as my daily driver, esp. during the winter. Of course, I'd rather just have a coupe/sedan as my daily and have the roadster for the weekends (negating the need for the removable hard top)...

ah ok
well its rare because not many ppl bother with it
being rare sometimes is a good thing
makes the boxster with hardtop extra unique and special and yeah, just to let ppl know that the option is available so dont shy away from boxster if anyone is looking to buy a car to drive thru out the whole year

now boxster S with removeable hardtop will be more flexible than new M coupe BMW has

I'd imagine installing, removing, and storing it are a bit of a pain, though. But I agree, if you only can have one car and you want a ragtop, removable hard top accessory is the way to go.
