Tom Walsh: Only the best will do for Mulally

September 6, 2006

The newly named chief executive officer of Ford Motor Co. drives a Lexus LS 430, the flagship luxury sedan from Toyota Motor Corp. that he unabashedly says he purchased because "it's the finest car in the world."

[...]

Sort of a patriotic call to duty.

"The reason I have a Lexus," Mulally told me in an interview after Tuesday's news conference, "is that it's the finest car in the world. I studied all the cars.

"And this is also the reason why I'm here (at Ford), because Boeing makes the finest commercial airplanes in the world, and what was compelling to me was that Bill Ford, when he called me, Bill wanted to focus on making the best auto company in the world ...

Larry EllisonSorry but, Larry is an absolute snob who doesn't drive anything but high-end Europeans. I know. I work for him.;) His commuter cars include, but are not limited to, 2 SL55's, 575M Maranello, Continental GT, Flying Spur, 745Li, and the E60 M5 he drove here to work today.

My information is from 2003. May be things have changed. But I do know that he is a big Lexus fan and among other things

1. Loves japanese art, especially paintings.
2. Owns one of the largest yatchs in the world named "Rising Sun".

It's just that I've never ever seen him drive anything Japanese to work in my 6 years of working for him. That's all.:D

Oh and add the G55 to his commuter list.

but that's just me. Yeah, first thing he needs to do is get a V8 back in the Lincoln. What a disaster at Ford. He will probably have an Aston Martin gratis in his contract until they find a buyer for them. Land Rover was another stupid acquisition. Jaguar has closed Coventry and the X-type is nothing but a re-badged Ford. At least Bill Ford took one for the team.....Let's see, they have the Mustang, the GT and the cop cars. That's it, right? I meant besides trucks, more trucks and big ole SUV's.

Because of Ford and GM Motown is in the crapper! On the Lexus Nav system you can scale down to building info scale in Detroit, NYC, LA and Chitown and you can get a list of what's inside each building and the phone numbers of all of the businesses. At the rate they are going it might be a pretty short list...

Granted, Lincolns don't have quite the build quality of a Lexus, but when he sees the stunning new interiors in the latest model Lincolns just about to hit the dealerships, I don't think he'll be complaining too much.

( In fact, by now, as the incoming boss, he has probably seen every one of them )

I don't see what the problem is for him. Doesn't Ford own Aston Martin?

So Mulally could drive an Aston Martin Vanquish, and then switch over to the Aston Martin Rapide when it comes out.

Hardly "step-downs" from the LS430. :p

But why would he? Japan doesn't make anything to compete with the cars you mentioned:

OK, the LS460L will compete with the 745Li. :)

Thanks a lot. ;)

I don't consider what I did a step back. My Explorer Limited has a V8 (can't get the RX with one), has loads of room (rule out GX) and isn't a decade old (rule out LX). I like the RX, GX, LX, but I'm happy with my step from Lexus to Ford!

I don't rule out at a Lexus in the future though.

Expect better things from ford in the future.

The newly named chief executive officer of Ford Motor Co. drives a Lexus LS 430, the flagship luxury sedan from Toyota Motor Corp. that he unabashedly says he purchased because "it's the finest car in the world."

He's also candid. He knows Lexus cars are better than anything currently in Ford's lineup, and he doesn't care if Ford employees or the media hear him say it out loud.

mavericck
09-09-06, 02:32 PM
I love our LS430, but I don' think its best car in the world or its segment. I bought because it was the cheapest in its segment and a damn good value and my wife wanted some luxurious, comfortable, safe, and reliable and the Lexus fit the bill for the least ammount of money. I personally would have gotten an A8 for myself, but my wife cares nothing for driving dynamics and the LS suits both of our needs better....well more hers.

Hopefully Mulally can rescure Ford.

i remember seeing the video of the LS 430, AMCI said that its the finest luxury sedan in the world, if i remember correctly and its by far the quiestest car in the world according to their instruments. and that was the 2001 LS 430 I believe. but anywho, i really like the LS 430 some may say its bland but when i see a 04+ scroll down the road in black with the 18" spory wheels, my head follows the car, i just think its looks classy in that combo.

What makes you say the LS460's is not up to par with the LS430?

Interior materials and build quality are a step down in the LS460, and that true for the rest of the line up as well, but also the low profile tires spoil the ride quality.

Gojirra99
09-02-07, 11:44 AM
The LS430UL NEVER had the full leather dash as well as the top part of the doors with leather as the LS600hL have. Especially the Executive package for both the LS460L & LS600hL, the rear center console with the fold table & the wood doors are so beautifully made that any LS430 cannot come close to comparing with, that's my observation.

Looks like he didn't opt for the Executive Seating Package after all. It's also funny because the spot next to his is supposed to be always empty, and yet today he seems to have let an executive VP park next to him... in a good mood maybe?
