View Full Version : Assignment by Feb 28, 2007 - night shots!
bitkahuna 01-11-07, 11:12 AM Theme: Night shots!
Take pictures at night, with or without flash. Try to go beyond being impressed because anything actually showed up in your picture in the dark. :D
Some good info in this thread:

Stormwind 01-11-07, 11:55 AM My contribution...
Do night shots also include shots taken at night inside a room that is not lit brightly?
Or is it strictly outdoors/indoors with little to no light?

ahh nice. I have a TON of night pics on my computer back in Philly that need serious work!! Im so bad at taking night shots. Glad this is the new assignment.
A shot from X-mas time using the Canon G6.
This was a lighted pathway at Cambria Pines Lodge garden area. It was illuminated by strings of lights as you see. The built-in flash was dialed down but it still washed it out a bit...gives you an idea of the scene.
http://www.michaelfongphotography.com/files/xmas02b.jpg
Same pathway...this is a 1 second handheld exposure where I turned the camera while the shutter was opened. A slight +2 bump in saturation brought back the vibrant colors.

Two bottle rockets going off on New Years eve.
One that I've done similar to the light swirl on film was the Vegas strip. Nowadays, it is too slow except maybe 2-5AM. Back when I did it, it was about 11'ish and I stuck the camera out the sunroof, ASA 100 film, f16 or f22, shutter to B with a 24mm lens for about 5 seconds or so. I took several passes to get one just the way I liked it but the streaking colorful lights on each side are kick-azz. Also twisted it to so it was a nice swirl.
I didn't publish that shot and I don't know where is today. Perhaps some CL Vegas member can do that and show me. :) With motion blur filters you can do it from a stationary position...just not as fun as a location experience IMO.

Hameed - I don't think indoors really qualifies as 'night' but go ahead - let's see them! What DOESN'T count are indoor shots with lots of lights on and flash or something like that.

Thank you! No, not yet at least. Still in high school and I might take photography school for fun during my college years and do professional photography on the side while I run a business.
I was on a summer vacation when I took that one, that is located in Singapore. The bug eye thing is a shopping center/theater called the Esplanade. You should visit there if you have a chance, a nice place to go for vacation .

During a video shoot out in central nowhere, I was curious about the low light performance of the Canon. The video was on the fringes of running out of light, especially on this wide shot, but the 20D had the advantage of higher ISO's and a tiny flash to pull up the foreground, even beyond its recommended range. Overall, I've got to thank you Paul, for hauling me kicking and screaming into the 21st century with a great DSLR. Now all I need is LOTS of practice. :)

I'm happy that you're enjoying it and you're off to a GREAT start!
If you want more flash power at some point, you might consider the 580EX - it's an amazing and intelligent flash. I almost got it a couple of times but timing wasn't right with other things going on.

Very nice! What ISO did you take that at? Did you use a tripod and what mode? Thanks a lot! ISO 400, f2.8, 1/50. Afraid to go to high ISOs having no experience with noise factors.
I shot in "night portrait" mode, trying to maximize exposure of a rather dark background. The original file is a full-size jpeg, from which this is resized to 720 x 480 for a video title background.
My old tripod was pretty inadequate, so I tried to drape my arm over the video rig on its big tripod to steady myself, but even with the camcorder in my armpit, I had this long directional mic and windscreen poking into the lower right of the frame at that wide angle. Rather than disassemble the mic or move a few yards back into the mesquite, sagebrush, and rattlesnakes, I just took a pace to my left and hand held it.
I quickly photoshopped the shot a little to balance up colors caused by the mix of sodium, mercury vapor lights and strobe - and add a bit more fill flash to the foreground. Also had to remove the company logo from the side of the doghouse at the client's request.

20D is good at 800 and 1600. 3200 (or 'H' in display) is noisier. And that's great exposure for just 1/50 I think.
I shot in "night portrait" mode,

You live over by West high? Great shot...what were your settings?
OK, you've got me there, no idea what mode that is on a 20D!Night Portrait is one of the presets near the bottom of the program dial. If I recall your "shortcourse" book (that's loaded in the car with the cameras on standby for another shoot), it is basically an aperture priority setting that opens the shutter and fires the strobe immediately, then holds the shutter open until the background is exposed. This could be huge with a bigger strobe! I'm not entirely clear on the operation, but I'm pretty pleased with the result. :)
whoster 03-01-07, 05:20 PM You live over by West high? Great shot...what were your settings?
i'm a west high alum :) class of 2004. and yes, i do live very close to west high. i live closer towards del amo now, but back in highschool i lived on Victor Street.
4" @ f/11 and 18mm
Man you are young...I wish I was class of 2004! You don't want to know how far apart we are (actually I don't want to do the math)...I used to play indoor VB at West all the time, but live by Knob Hill and El BJ in RB.
thanks for the info on the settings...I need to try it out! This morning (5:15 AM or so) would have been great with the setting red/orange moon over the horizon/pacific ocean...I need to walk my camera out there one of these mornings and snap a shot.

You're all over it. The mode is Night Scene I believe.
See here.

My first time looking at and posting in the digi photography forum. Sorry I'm late, but just wanted to share.

Thanks! I'm reading through the forum now. I'll definitely be looking out for the next assignment, and can hopefully contribute.

Wow, welcome! GREAT pictures.
Where is the first one? I thought Seattle from across the sound but maybe that's not right.
What gear are you using? And do you do it for a living?
Anyway awesome.
I'm open to suggestions for new assignments.

All of these pictures are in San Diego, which is where I live. The first one is from across the bay in Coronado.
I used to be a newspaper photographer in high school. But, that was years ago and that was on film. I stopped taking pictures shortly after. I just picked up my first DSLR late last year and am re-learning EVERYTHING! Kinda frustrating but it is a lot of fun again. I have the XTi with the so-so lens that comes with it and a 24-70mm f/2.8L. Hoping to pick up the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS soon, which fits more of my style of shooting.
I wish I could say that I'm a photographer which is a dream I never pursued, but I'm a Financial Analyst for the City.
As for assignments, I've had this idea to shoot something at dusk, right before sunset. So, dusk "light" shots? I noticed that there were some questions on night shots and how to get them. Everyone has taken shots during broad daylight. So, dusk or "the magic hour" as many call it, offers an in between time with beautiful colors and good lighting for great shots. So, that's my suggestion.
Some really impressive stuff here! Who knew that a bunch of car crazies could also take professional photos. A great challenge!
Suggestions: considering the season, how about "Spring"?, or I'll second the "Dusk" (or "Dawn") idea as well.
I know I'm late... but I figure it's better late than never.

Congrats on getting into digital photography. I just sold my 70-200 f/2.8L IS by the way - you coulda picked up one in mint condition for a good deal. If you consider used, I suggest looking on fredmiranda.com's buy and sell forum.

Wow, great shots and a great suggestion - great start! My only concern is that we'll get too many sunsets.

Thanks for the info. Any reason why you sold the lens? I rented it once to try it out and loved it! It is a pretty penny though. I'll check out the site. I don't mind buying used, but I am cautious when it comes to buying used online. Thanks for the info.

Nice skribblez. Only thing I'd change is try to take it without the people in it or crop or edit them out.
