i saw the opening episode for season 9, and they were explaining how he was going at around 230mph while crashing and flying through the grass....

I was also watching it last night.
They had a lot of fun with it too.

wow.... 230, what was he driving... an F1? Since the video has been removed, can someone fill us in how it happened?

He was driving a jet car when the right front tire blew out at 230mph which cased the car to start sliding sideways, as soon as it went off the tarmac and onto the grass it started to flip.

correction: he had hit 280mph when his right front tire blew, causing the car to veer right and off the runway into the grass where the car continued on its crazy path at about 230mph, rolling, flipping, and digging Hammond's head into the grass where it came to rest.

it's quite a somber scene as they play the video with Hammond describing what happened.

Clarkson and May, the two other presenters actually teared a bit as the crash footage was shown--twice. once at actual speed, once at slow-motion so Hammond could describe the crash in more detail. He's lucky that Top Gear has and had a live EMT crew at every film shoot in case something goes wrong--the ambulance was by the wreck even before the smoke from the tire cleared out.

The video of the crash doesn't look that horrific because you can't judge relative speed. The wreck wasn't spectacular, but when you factor the speed... he's lucky to be alive. :thumbup:
