View Full Version : Why can't Lexus design decent OEM wheels?
MPLexus301 04-05-07, 01:07 PM Well...they can. Some of the time. The GS 450h and GS 430 are the only two that really look GOOD to me. The Tourmaline, G-Spider, and ISP-Mode alloys look great, but are only options. The LS 460 Touring, SC 430, IS350, GX and RX have decent wheel choices (though not amazing), but what is wrong with the rest of the lineup? They might have the ugliest wheel selections...in the industry.
Cheesy and too busy for a full size, $75K SUV:

I know some of you like these, but I think they're too busy for a $60K car:

These are quite possibly, the absolute worst wheels over $50K

I wasn't aware that the J30 Touring rims were back in style:
http://www.lexus.com/models/ES/accessories/images/17in_esport_alloy_wheels_1.jpg
And on top of that the standard rims on the ES and RX 350's are terrible, and the new optional 18's on the RX are possibly worse than the standard ones.
I don't understand how they can do some stuff that looks SO good, and some that looks SO bad!

Enough reason why the aftermarket wheel industry is flourishing. :D
MPLexus301 04-05-07, 01:20 PM I know that everyone has the option of aftermarket, but most owners aren't going to go out and spend another $2K on wheels for a car that costs as much as these do.
I think nice wheels can completely kill, or compliment a design. The LS 460 Touring looks KILLER with the 5 Spoke 19" rims...the standard car? It looks alright. Same can be said for a GS 350 and GS 430...wheels make ALL the difference in a design and it is unfortunate that Lexus isn't putting enough effort into making them decent.
I'm one of the few, but I have always loved Lexus wheel design.
MPLexus301 04-05-07, 01:36 PM I actually really like the wheels on the GX and '07 LX, and even two of the wheels on the RX. I think 5 spoke/split 5 spokes look best on SUVS, which need to look "beefy" instead of ricey like the new LX/'08RX wheels.

Hmph....never really noticed, but they all have the same basic design (including the ES350 UL wheels). Only ones I like are the IS-F wheels out of that group though. The rest just do not fit the design of the car.
thetopdog 04-05-07, 01:48 PM Don't even get me started on the worst rims ever fitted to a production car http://www.autoguide.net/apf/images/products_small/keystone/zob25839f.jpg

Shawnmack 04-05-07, 02:11 PM Well since Infiniti saves cost by poor interior. Lexus saves cost by having plain wheels. Except the 19's on the New LS and the 18's on the GS 350

Which are already similar to the classic BBS wheel design.

Ugly wheels can leave a bad first impression on the car.
Probably thats why I never liked the SC430 until I saw one years later with aftermarket rims. :(
tmf2004 04-05-07, 02:41 PM Yea Lexus prettu much does everything right in the design of the vehicle but when it come to Wheels they need a lesson from D2.. LOL  The only ones that aren't bad are the 18's that you can get on the GS.. I think its the 8th pic down from the top.. Not to bad.. IMO..
blacksc400 04-05-07, 02:43 PM hehe, I don't care about the oem wheels, I gonna change them on my cars anyway/ :woohoo:
encore888 04-05-07, 03:39 PM The SC 430 original wheels got 'pie platter' as a nickname.
Much improved now.
I think Lexus has the potential to build great rims, look at the IS ones. And those on the GS 450h and RX 400h, plus on the '08 RX 350.
Lexus needs some schooling from BMW when it comes to designing wheels. Hell, even GM makes nicer wheels with Escalade than this new LS's stupid looking bland wheels.

same here. i didn't like the car until i saw the aftermarket.
marshmallo 04-05-07, 03:49 PM Hahaha, this thread hits the nail right on the head.
The 17's that come with the GS are a complete joke.
The 18's are OK, but after a while I am getting tired of them. They
may be my winter set from now on...
In fairness 99% of OEM wheels suck. I think the only ones I really
like are MB AMG wheels.
1SICKLEX 04-05-07, 03:53 PM Funny but Lexus is the best selling brand in America, clearly the stock wheels are fine :)
I don't like many of them and yes, they are plain. Do you know people like plain? Not everyone wants staggered wheels. Not everyone wants mesh (a PITA to clean).
Are wheels a Lexus selling point? No. IF you are buying a car b/c of the wheels it has, just buy the wheels and forget about the car.
MPLexus301 04-05-07, 04:00 PM Eh, I don't agree sick. In an age when automotive design is becoming more and more important, and especially more competitive, Lexus as one of the top premium auto makers needs to step forward and give their wheel designs more originality and more flair.
Look at some of the wheels from BMW and Inifniti, Mercedes has some nice designs, and even GM is doing a nicer job.
There is just little to no effort going into most of Lexus rims, and it sucks because the design of the cars themselves is so great...only to be somewhat downplayed by boring or bland wheels.
They COULD do better, and they've shown that with some of their wheels...just not most.
Coco-bun 04-05-07, 04:04 PM arent those BMW wheels by BBS?
and my favorite OEM Toyota wheel

I hate those wheels. :thumbdn: I've always found those wheels reminiscent of a turtle or the infamous teddy bear wheels. I think this is why some members who want to upgrade their stock wheels look to other OEM brand wheels such as Infiniti or Nissan-- OEM quality that won't hurt the wallet and loosk better than a lot of the Lexus choices. I am personally thinking downgrading to OEM 18" Lexus wheels from my 20" wheels since my car is a DD, and the only choice it's come down to is the 06+ 5 Spoke GS wheels. These are the only "take-offs" that would look right on my 98'.
sleeper408 04-05-07, 04:14 PM same here. i didn't like the car until i saw the aftermarket.
Me too. Stock SC430's didn't really catch my eye until the Pebble Beach Edition came out.
MrG4Life 04-05-07, 04:19 PM I don't have much to complain about the stock wheels that came with my GS. But aftermarket ones rule
BlueIS05 04-05-07, 05:22 PM What about the stock '01-'05 IS wheels? Some of the best looking stockies on any brand IMO. Of course, I could be biased! :D

which car do those lexus rims come from and where can i guy them?
Taken as a whole package, I'll concede if the wheel isn't quite to my liking so long as the main features agree. Maybe Bob from Zone Wheels wouldn't mind joining the Lexus design team. ;) :D
IS_NIICE 04-05-07, 08:33 PM the BMW mesh wheels are the M3 competition package wheels or sometimes called CSL rims. the lexus lookalikes are the Gspyders. i have the XPackage starfish rims on my IS, def one of my fave lexus stock wheels besides Gspyders

Ah yes, well if you count Europe, the BMW Group sells more cars than any other luxury brands...are you saying BMW is the McDonald's of luxury cars? ;) Would you like some fries with your lovely 3-series happy meal? :p
LOL, just sayin'...:) I personally think that when one has the sales crown, they deserve some credit, even for their shortcomings, because evidently they have a winning formula that overcomes those issues...BMW or Lexus or anyone who's #1 somewhere.
In terms of OEM wheels, I personally don't think any car make consistently produces great wheels. Most are rather forgettable and fortunately inoffensive. A big deal is whether they are easy to clean. Sometimes the better looking ones are hard to clean.
Also, times change. When I first saw the LS 430 '05 5-spoke wheels, I dismissed them as outright ugly. But after seeing them on the street, I realized that they worked well for that model...it's a design aesthetic that works on a certain flavor of car beauty.
Overall, ISICKLEX has a point. Clearly the Lexus stock wheels are fine enough (aka decent enough) that people buy the cars in record numbers. If they were indecent, or that strikingly bad...there should be some sign? I think there's room for improvement though.
marshmallo 04-05-07, 11:14 PM People wonder why the GS is failing and not selling well in its class.
Those plasticky looking OEM 17'' wheels can't be helping the cause.
They are so bad I would not want to use them for a winter beater
setup.
Yeah and the SC430 pizza dishes are some of the worst OEM rims
ever.
Has there ever been a brand or product that did not come under scrutiny for something?
NOT all of the wheels Lexus has provided on their cars are bad. They do have the five spoke design, which I have noticed, a ton of members have aftermarket versions of.
McDonalds sells more burgers than any other restaurant in the world... clearly, they are far superior to any other burger.
^^haha good point. Also I love the 2IS xpackage rims as well!

I really don't see it as that big of a deal.
I guess hard core car enthusiasts may find this an issue but I'm willing to bet that 99.999% of people buy cars for their over all looks and not the wheels. This is why dealerships usually offer alternative OEM wheels. If you don't like the standard stock look.. well upgrade them. :P If you aren't buying a car due to the wheels I don't think you were ready to buy a car to begin with!
I'm happy we get wheels and not hubs! Plus its nice that the OEM 18s on the 2IS are nice lookin'. :P
leksusGS15 04-07-07, 04:51 PM Most lexus wheels are outright UGLY, especially the non chrome on the 2nd GEN GS.
leksusGS15 04-07-07, 04:54 PM LOL... Sharpest Lexus wheel...
McDonalds sells more burgers than any other restaurant in the world... clearly, they are far superior to any other burger.
In terms of value, they are.
chrispy 04-07-07, 05:10 PM How can anyone not like the GS400/430 5 spokes? The GS works well with a clean 5 spoke.

I agree, they're a great design. The GS 6 spoke is terrible though
chrispy 04-07-07, 05:19 PM I agree, they're a great design. The GS 6 spoke is terrible though
I always though it would look good swapped onto a smaller car, like maybe a Corolla.
MPLexus301 04-07-07, 05:20 PM Also agree. I LOVE the previous gen GS/IS 5-Spoke rims!
1SICKLEX 04-07-07, 05:37 PM I agree the 5 spokes on the 2GS and 1IS are nice. Most 5 spokes look good and make a car look better.
marshmallo 04-07-07, 07:02 PM Pretty much all Lexus 5-spoke wheels are decent looking...
I went to the Porsche dealer to check things out and haha,
their OEM wheels kind of suck too :p
