I was considering this over my sc400. the main reason is the 5 spd. i know i could get an sc300 5spd, but i like these too.
i wouldnt be looking at a vr4 (tt) but probably about a 95 3.0 DOHC with 100k on it.

the other thing is the biggest performance part supplier in the country for it 3sxperformance i pass on the way to school everyday. thought that was cool

 

The car still looks good to this day, apparently they were pretty fast too. I heard it has some complicated stuff like 4 wheel steering and an active exhaust and I would be worried about the durability of that stuff after 12 years

junk my gf's dad has one nothing but problems and has already been through 1 engine a bunch of intercooler piping and what nots crap stay away from them !!!

 

Don't do it man. The non turbo model is FWD which sucks IMO and is slow. My friends little brother has a '99 3000gt non turbo'd and it ran high 16's in the 1/4. I would rather a non turbo 300zx or something like that, that is still RWD.

 

there hard to maintain, there really hard to work on, parts are not as readily available ( depending on your area I guess ), and because of the small market for them they dont have alot of options in terms of aftermarket performance...... on the other hand they are unique and still look good to this day

 

Never mind the 0-60 and quarter mile times. You don't buy a car just to go drag racing.

But, from a reliability standpoint, I wouldn't recommend a 3000 GT that old either. The non-turbo models were generally not as complex as the VR4, with its AWD, 4-wheel-steering, and twin turbos, but still, you say it has 100K miles. Older-generation Mitsu engines tend to develop upper-block problems after about 80K miles or so.....things like head gaskets, valve guides, etc....
and become oil burners and coolant leakers...or worse.

If you want this class of car......a premium Japanese sports car from the early-to-mid-90's, I would recommend the Toyota Supra first, from a reliability standpoint, then a RWD Nissan 300ZX.

 

Why not consider the previous 300ZX TT.

That's one awesome car ~ still!

 

I would rather deal with an Eclipse than a 3000GT, but even and Eclipse runs into maintenance hell.

We could probably help if you let us know what you want to do with the vehicle, drag racing...drifting...etc.

There is no reason to go for '95. You can get '97 or '98 for almost the same price. If you go for FWD, go with SL trim, its better value and price difference is not that big. Don't worry FWD ones are also quick.

NOTE: Make sure that you get one that is not abused! Somehow you have to check it out because if it is it will be a nightmare (that's how they got bad rep) 3KGTs that are in good condition do cost more, good VR4s cost significantly more, so don't be fooled by good deals cause there are non on 3000GTs

If you can get one that is clean (even with more than 100K miles) everything will be butter smooth for you AS LONG AS YOU MAINTAIN IT.

I owned both SL and VR4 and never had any major problems except few clutch jobs, two clutch cylinders, one window motor and power antenna, but I maintained them accordingly (even took them to a dealer for oil change just to build trust just in case something happens in the future). Insurance is a *****, I used to pay $3,200 for SL and $3,900 for VR4 (no collision) a year.

Keep looking, don't be in a rush and I am sure there is some nice 3KGT that has been babysited and worshiped ready for sale.

VR4 would violate current and last gen M3 up in the as* all day everyday and it would want more.. as long as the clutch lasts

 

OTOH, as far as I remember the 3000GT has the Mitsubishi 6G72 and 6G74 engines. While they are reliable engines, and provided they're maintained properly they would keep on going, I would be a bit cautious about one with that sort of mileage. The 6G72 and 6G74 are prone to having bad valve stem seals roundabout the 125,000 mile mark and may need a minor overhaul.

300ZX is not reliable too...
tt300ZX and VR4 are nice to drive when they running good.. but how many times they are in that top condition?
I owned 1 3000GT and 3 300ZX before, and no, please don't get them...

I always thought the 3000GT (and it's Stealth counterpart) were heavy pigs... there was a guy in Virginia when I lived there with a '95 SL (non-turbo) that my naturally aspirated '85 MR2 would show it's taillights to regularly. He was not happy, nor was his girlfriend amused... my little 1.6 liter MR2 could throw a serious beat-down on that thing, in acceleration, braking, cornering- you name it (of course, I know how to really drive the MR2).

I guess it's probably a good car to pick up cheap, and you could talk to GT Pro about making it go fast if you get a Turbo model. The 3000GT doesn't have much of a back seat; considering this, other cars I would consider would be a second-gen MR2, Supra, S2000 or 300ZX. Or, if you have a few more bucks, an NSX...

What are the 3000GT's cars going for these days?
