Very nice, but I wish it had more depth of field to get all of them in focus. Just step back and then zoom in a bit more, plus a higher f stop (maybe f/8 or f/11).

I really like the picture, but the out of focus cake at the top of the photo kills it.

Nice, makes me hungry :) I love tiramisu, black forest, cheese cakes of all types, but they don't often make them look as nice as these.

Thanks guys.
Wanted the shallow DOF to highlight the front two pieces but more specifically the left one. A linear shot arranged in a row would have been the better arrangement for this. Sometimes in the planning, little details escape and it's not noticed till post shot. :egads: By then...they were in the stomach. ;)

That's okay...I don't mind having to re-shoot things like this...;)

I messed the icing up so I did this series:
Exposures values are a bit different on some frames due to my quick selection...

Oh...this was a chocolate walnut cake.

What amuses me is when I do some food images, I go to the dept. stores looking for plates. When I come up to the counter or ask for singles of plates/bowls, I'm often asked "only one...?" :D

I think you did a good job with it but i also agree that they should of all been in focus because it kind of looks like your trying to seclude the other 2 apetizing pieces :)

Very pretty. Very nice.

Knowing what a detail guy you are though... I'd love to see the fork in focus too, or rather just a bit more depth of field because even the top square piece on the cake is a little out of focus too. Plus I'm not sure the flower/plant behind is adding much - or rather, it's so contrasty to its background that it's more distraction than just background.

But nevertheless - VERY nice!

Appreciate the feedback.

Last year I took a food seminar and I'm trying to apply some of the details. I've been spending about $20-$30/week to buy these things and I hope it doesn't go to making my waist bigger. ;) :( I told the wife last night, I don't want to continue eating them but to toss them afterwards seems wasteful. They are tasty, so it's hard. ;) :(

Not really my submission for this excellent assignment, but just poking some fun at it. I will submit my real submission this weekend though.

Background story:
My wife makes a snack and lunch for my kids to take to school and they usually take two plastic containers to school everyday - you know those small plastic containers that you can buy at the grocery store that have the quick snap on lids and for the most part are leak proof

Anyway, as soon as they come back home, they are "supposed" to take out the lunch containers from their school bags and put them in the kitchen.

Well, my younger son never finishes his food - he eats very little (unlike my older son who eats like a horse) and on some days he would deliberately "forget" to take out the lunch containers from his bag mainly because he knows his mom would get mad at him for not finishing his food

Well guess what? this morning when he was going to school, my wife could not believe how big his school bag had "grown" , so she opened it and could not believe her eyes. :eek2:

She started taking out the lunch containers with partially decomposing food in them and the containers would not stop coming out. A whopping 12 containers came out.

So we decided to make light of the situation and stacked them up on the breakfast counter (it sounds horrible, but it's not) and the pile is about 3/4 of his height!

Tried to no avail to talk him into posing beside his "collection", but he wouldn't fall for it. :D

That's his long "lost" lunch bag and bottle of water that mysteriously "dissappeared" in his bag three weeks ago too.

All that in that bag?!

Good thing there wasn't any broccoli in there. We had an "air tight" container like that get lost in the depths of the fridge. It had become bloated with the nasty fumes of the decomposing broccoli...it opened with a swoosh of air...pretty nasty smelling too. ;)

Not in the lunch bag shown above. That lunch bag had two containers in it too.

Sunday Breakfast! Can you say yummy???:thumbup::D

- Fresh cut fruit - mango, strawberries. Blueberries.
- Bacon style chicken strips
- Spanish omelette - melted cheddar cheese, chopped zuchini, hot green chillies, green pepper (all folded neatly inside). Topped off with hot salsa!
- Freshly cooked butter pancake with Pure Maple syrup.
- Glass of papaya juice on the side!

All laid out on my granite breakfast counter. :D

Credit goes to my beautiful wife for cooking this delicious breakfast and the layout of the various menu items on the plate.

Asimo and Hameed, nice shots. :thumbup:Thanks Paul. I know mine could have been tons better if I had deliberately focussed on the composition a bit more:

- place food on table cloth so that granite counter is not visible
- switch plate around so that omelette is at the front
- take the shot from across the food at roughly the same height from the ground as the food is, rather than on top to reduce the "flatness" of the pic and give it more of a 3D look
- remove maple syrup bottle
- switch cutlery around
- use cutlery that is not stained lol
- make layout less symmetrical.

good tips
i shouldve taken my rack of lamb pics from a bit more across too
but i was too lazy to do a proper backdrop and remove any lines in the background if i was to do more of a horizontal shot
:p

if i was to do my shot properly
i wouldve presented the dish a bit better too
i wouldve made some cous-cous and a simple red wine & some sort of berry sauce to go with the lamb and make it look good
i was too hungry that night when i was making it so didnt want to bother with it
lol

here is a birthday cake i made a couple of years back for my ex-gf

when we were still going out of course, then that bI&*& ripped my heart out and ate it too... lol

i said i didnt have the energy nor time to setup a backdrop and so on
taking a pic only took me a few seconds
and posting the pics afterwards on a full stomach is no problems

doing extra work with an empty stomach is a biggy though
lol

but if u being a mod dont think i should post my pics, i wont bother to do so

Well done everyone.

Some final thoughts before closing...

Some nice clean shots of food in here - some in nice settings.

I do think we can do better - think 'art' not just taking a photo of something. To get art we may need an unusual angle, a provocative 'prop' to go with the food, or even something interesting done in post processing. I didn't do enough in this assignment myself - just had too much else going on (I was in Europe for 8 days).

I may need to be clearer in the assignment, pointing out things that don't qualify. ;)

Anyway, thanks for everyone's contribution. :D
