Audi claims that the new Audi A5 and S5 handle better than any Audi ever made, but can it take on the king of handling? Mike Duff of AutoCar put the Audi S5 up against the BMW 335i and here is what he found.
Handling: Handling is said to be better than previous Audi’s with the use of the 40:60 front-rear torque distribution found in the RS4, but BMW counters with steering response and perfect handling balance. The Audi S5 still keeps up by being more agile than the 335i with near-perfect traction out of slow corners. Basically the sportiest non-RS badged car made by Audi, Audi S5 holds handling up to par with the 335i.
Engine: Audi S5 takes this one with its 4.2 liter V8 354 horsepower. The BMW 335i uses a 3.0 liter inline-6 300 horsepower engine.
0-62 mph: Audi S5 leaves the BMW 335i in the rear-view-mirror with 5.1 seconds while the BMW 335i takes 5.5 seconds.
Room: One six-footer can fit in the rear-seat of the BMW 335i more comfortably than the Audi S5, where they will find their knees crushed and their heads pressed against the roof lining.
Pricing: The Audi S5 costs a whopping £6030 more than a 335i in SE trim, and £4155 more than the 335i M-Sport trim.
Winner: BMW 335i. While the Audi S5 offers a little more kick than the BMW 335i, the huge price difference, according to Duff, can’t be justified.
too bad they ignored that Audi A5/S5 interior and exterior design >>>>>>>>>>> 335
IMO Audi needs an engien to bridge the gap b/t the 260 hp 3.2 V6 and 350 hp 4.2 V8. 300-320 hp A5 thats priced around the 335 would be better than a 335 as an overall car

this says a lot about the 335, since they feel the s5 is not worth the price over it....
IMO it doesn't say much. This is just one persons opinion. You ever read R&T for example? They have a comparo and 4 or 5 editors each pick which car they prefer it's usually not the same car, does one peosons opinion mean anything? Do they have any tests or numbers to go with it? For all we know the S5 can be significantly better (by the numbers).
Also the Audi had AWD and a V8.. what do they expect it to cost less? The AWD option in the BMW costs an extra $2K.
There is not a direct comparison V8 to the 3-series, but in the 5-series to go from the 535i to the 550i with 360hp V8 it costs an extra $8K. I know there is probably a bit of bundled features with the V8 5-series but still it's understood that the more powerful V8 costs more.
All at once the BMW coupe that we've considered the leader in its class finally decides it's had enough. With its oil temperature pinned at 300 degrees F and its coolant temperature climbing rapidly, the turbocharged Bavarian wonder engages its limp-home mode and we crawl pathetically back to the pits.
This all-too-dramatic demonstration of Japanese-versus-German engineering occurred at Nissan's Arizona Test Center, where Infiniti invited a select group of journalists to drive the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe back-to-back with Germany's best. The limp-home part, well, that wasn't part of the plan.
In fairness, both cars had experienced a relentless pounding by journalists with a profound absence of mechanical sympathy before the BMW finally succumbed to the desert heat. But the flogging had been similarly abusive to both cars, and the Infiniti G37 never showed any signs of weakness.
You are basing a lot on one short review that doesn't even have real test numbers.
It has a lot to do with the vehicle, and its heritage.. Many car companies have tried to knock BMW off the mantle...Close but no cigar (love the RS4 though )..BMW will always have that bullseye on them...There is a reason... Drive one and you will understand..

ha, I've driven several (including the M3 and M5) and owned one BMW. You make it sound like anyone who does not own a BMW has never driven one.
All I'm saying is that based on this one review I'm not convinced the 335i is the best car. I will agree it's cheaper.
Many people don't find the current BMWs nice to look at (putting it mildly).
If you want the nicer looking car (in and out): the Audi wins.
If you want the more powerful car: Audi.
If you prefer AWD with your COUPE don't go to BMW (sedans only for awd).
I wouldn't decide what car is best or best for me until after I drive them both.
I believe theres a 328xi coupe, but no 335xi coupe. (at least not yet)
I like them both. I believe the S5 looks a hell of a lot better inside and out, but I love the modability of the Bimmer engine. Plus the S5 will probably cost a lot more.
